BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition is at odds over how to spend a record budget surplus, with her conservatives calling for corporate tax cuts while center-left Finance Minister Olaf Scholz is favoring more public investment.

Berlin faces pressure at home and abroad to inject more fiscal stimulus into Europe’s largest economy as a way to boost sluggish growth and with it also support economic activity in the wider euro zone.

“What’s on the agenda in Germany now is that we’ll invest a lot,” Scholz said after the finance ministry published budget figures showing the federal government made a record surplus of 13.5 billion euros last year.

I’m sure this is a totally foreign idea to these people but, if your government has surplus income it means you have taxed your people too much.

Another thing to think about before you get out the check book is, this is a record surplus, that means it is an aberration. Next year it may be a deficit year, it certainly will be a much smaller surplus if you have a surplus.

Don’t start spending like this money is going to last forever. Don’t jump in to a long term spending on the assumption that this windfall is going to be there every year.

Maybe they should give that money back to the taxpayers?

Never mind. They’re liberals/socialists. They will struggle with their burden, but they will surely find a way to spend that money in the most ineffective way possible.

Boy. What a fall from grace. They were a fearsome military power. Not that I admired their objectives, far from it but sheesh. Now they’ve turned into fruit flavored saur kraut.

It’s not a surplus.
They over-taxed.

- The US federal government budget deficit surpassed $1 trillion in 2019,

Then you are under taxed.

The surplus exists because the people are over taxed

Ding! I can think of something Germany desperately needs to spend more on and which they promised their partners they’d spend more on: their national defense.

But of course the thought of not being a bunch of freeloading leeches never occurred to them.
