Hindus linked to ruling BJP rally against planned statue that will rival Rio de Janeiro's Christ The Redeemer for size.
Hundreds of hardline Hindus affiliated to India's ruling party have rallied to protest against planned Jesus statue that will rival Rio de Janeiro's Christ The Redeemer for size.
The protests in the southern state of Karnataka's Ramanagara district on Monday were led by far-right Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), with its members clutching saffron flags as around 1,000 police stood by.
..."We want to stop [the statue], since it goes against the spirit of communal harmony and encourages religious conversions which is rampantly carried out by Christian missionaries," Prabhakar Bhat, a top RSS functionary, told Indian media.
Construction of the white granite statue 114 feet (34.7 metres) high - slightly shorter than the Rio monolith although the base will be bigger - stopped soon after it started last month after objections.
Many Hindus believe the hill where the statue is set to stand in the Christian-dominated village of Harobele is the abode of a Hindu deity, although no temple exists there.
..Fewer than 1 percent of Karnataka's 65 million people are Christian, compared with around 2 percent in Hindu-majority India as a whole.

Its India. Its where they come from. You dont see giant statues of Shiva inside the Vatican(The Who knows what Francis will lull next). The Hindus are wonderfully tolerant in the USA from my experience. You dont see them pulling the crap that the Muslims do here.
Correction
Who knows what Francis will pull next.
The RSS is the activist arm of the ruling BJP party, and many high-ranking BJP personalities are former (or current) RSS members, including Modi himself and the Home Minister Amit Shah. The RSS is known for conducting terrorist operations. Gandhi was assassinated by an RSS operative named Naturam Godse.
Actually, there’s a rather large Christian population in India, mostly in Kerala in the South and in Goa (which is a former Portuguese colony unlike the rest of India). Most Indian Christians are Catholic, as are most of the churches. There are also still many Catholic-run schools, and in most hospitals the nurses are still referred to as “Sister” even if the hospital isn’t religious.
However you do see statues of Hindu gods and goddesses all over the west -- and that's fine, they are good people
The money would have been better spent to build a Christian hospital. Might win over more hearts and souls, too, than by putting up a big, in your face, idol. Jesus doesnt need a statue. The Word will suffice.
Also, more than 2.5% of India’s population are Christian - that’s about 33 million people. And Christianity was in India probably before it even reached the city of Rome
Absolutely. What really pi$$es me off is numb skull so called patriots who persecute Sikhs because they wear turbans. Theyre not Muslims, asshats, Theyre on our side you brain dead jerks.
“The Hindus are wonderfully tolerant in the USA from my experience. You dont see them pulling the crap that the Muslims do here.”
Because they’re outnumbered.
Whatsamatter? Lil animal gawdz feeling threatened? This just shows they have no faith in their beliefs, too weak to stand on their own.
So are the Muslims
Thus, no "religion" should have aught against HE who claims to "be" ... "the truth"
The argument(s) utilizing "conversion" as a reason to reject something is really saying;
I don't want anyone else telling a story that would conflict with the story I'M telling.
They wont be that tolerant the way they are flooding in here .
In India, with notable exceptions, they are tolerant as well.
In Islamic countries, tolerance is the exception. In India, intolerance is the exception
The reason given is that the pace of conversion in India is accelerating. By Hindu hardliner reports, they claim that now 10% of India are Christian.
You have misread something. I was referring to Sikhs. Please reread
Perhaps not in the Vatican but you can elsewhere in the West.IMO Western countries...particularly the US and Britain...should start banning Hindu temples in response.
India has, at least on paper, freedom of religion.
The issue is that the current ruling party centers its ideology around Hindu nationalism to the point where Hinduism and patriotism are one and the same.
Given the fact that India is only 3% Christian it’s hard to believe they’re getting this worked up about it.
