Attorney General William P. Barr declared on Monday that a deadly shooting last month at a naval air station in Pensacola, Fla., was an act of terrorism, and he asked Apple in an unusually high-profile request to provide access to two phones used by the gunman.
Mr. Barrs appeal was an escalation of a continuing fight between the Justice Department and Apple pitting personal privacy against public safety.
This situation perfectly illustrates why it is critical that the public be able to get access to digital evidence, Mr. Barr said, calling on technology companies to find a solution and complaining that Apple had provided no substantive assistance.

Fascinating info, Sword. Thanks for pulling that together.
No, I havent. Its just contrary to my experiences with Apple. I actually dont doubt your account. Ive heard similar inexplicable stories before. Sometimes, theres no explanation why Apple does what it does.
I had one client I went with to Apple who had a four year old laptop that was having severe intermittent problems. . . They took her laptop into the back and after about 45 minutes came back and said they could not figure out what was wrong with it. The manager came over and said the only To solve her problem was to replace it. She said she couldnt afford that (at the time a replacement was ~$2500). He said, No, you misunderstand, we are going to give you a new one. It will take a while to transfer your data. We just need your permission to do that
Sure enough, about 40 minutes later he came out with a brand new, state of the art Mac laptop, and handed it to her. No charge. He said, We are keeping your old one and sending it to Apple for them to try and figure out why its doing what its doing. All your data is on this new computer and weve erased it off your old drive. He showed her that was true. Her original had been out of warranty for two years.
For you, all I can imagine is something raised a red flag for Apple that showed something suspicious was going on and maybe you werent you. Otherwise I cant imagine why the number of hoops you had to jump through to get your phone unlocked.
You are absolutely correct. I supported Apple when Obama’s DOJ pulled this crap in 2015. This is a far overreach of government abuse. Apple does not allow its phones to be cracked which is one reason I use the iPhone. There is no reason that the NSA could not access this Saudi bastard’s emails, texts and calls. The government needs to stop letting foreigners, especially Saudis, onto our military bases for aviation training. Enough is enough already.
Thanks for sharing the RIMM story.
Apples IP is of greater importance as far as Im concerned. And Im not confident the DOJ is being sincere. The PR seems so JV
To paraphrase the aphorism...
“A person and their iPhone can keep a secret, if one of them is dead!”
I’m all for Apple’s privacy standards.
Nonetheless most people don’t care. They install apps and games with no regard for their privacy.
I get the impression Apple is making less money for their privacy concerns than they planned. It’s not the marketing tool they thought. Not going to argue the point though.
The security of Apple is way overblown.
A judge can jail you for not providing your passcode, and, of course, a criminal can coerce it from you.
If you’re dead, Apple’s security is very , very good!
Offering help on a product that was designed to be “un-helpable” is just silly.
Apple makes money marketing that they can’t crack the product. Isn’t it stupid then to praise them for “helping?
Hate to respond to someone whose replies have been so childish.
But, if you’re willing to be responsible...
I’m confused now.
Does Apple sell and forget it’s “security” as I blame it for doing.
Or not
Can they break through a passcode?
Is this an opt-in feature?
They helped them to the extent they could. If you dont want youre stuff on the cloud exposed dont put it there, spys dont. You are insufferably dense on the subject, why do you insist on exposing yourself as the unhappy person you are?
LOL!
I knew you couldn’t resist playing the fool.
But I had to give you the chance.
I didn’t opt in. I think I had ios 9. Did it last year. Now have 12.
I could even connect my phone to my itunes active computer and still grab photos from my ‘locked/bricked’ phone but Apple wouldn’t let me log into my phone (didn’t have my itunes password and they wouldn’t let me reset it my email or reset it at the store).
I had my number code but it didn’t matter to Apple.
I don’t recall at this point if the number code became irrelevant with the reset password or not. The whole thing was transacted online and not through my phone as I recall (through apple’s site).
Apple wouldn’t let texts come into my phone because of the way they bricked it. So stupid and infuriating. Paid for a month of cell service and got half of that.

After the reset password (and whatever else Apple had me do) I was able to get into my phone, no lost data. No backup/restore activity.

Thanks for the reply.
It’s great security for dead people I agree LOL!
You’re the most cowardly person on FR.
Apple is alright with me. But people like you, who don’t care about anything else, are disgusting.
Thou sayest. Fool
“O wad some Power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as ithers see us!”
Come on, look at your posts! LOL!
You are a piker trying to hide your ignorance with insults. It isn't working well for you, but keep trying.
