SACRAMENTO California has been slowly erasing legal immigration status as a requirement for medical coverage under the states healthcare program for low-income residents, allowing children and, this month, young adults living in the U.S. illegally to enroll. Now, Democratic lawmakers expect Gov. Gavin Newsom to embrace an effort to include seniors without legal status in the states Medi-Cal program either in his new state budget or with his signature on legislation. Newsom will send the Legislature a full state spending plan this week and is expected to unveil it Friday. State Sen. Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) said she expects it to include the Medi-Cal expansion after the governor told her in September that he would champion the effort in his next budget. Durazo said that assurance prompted her to hold her bill last year that would have expanded coverage to adults 65 or older who are living in the U.S. illegally.
He made a very explicit commitment that he would include it in his budget, Durazo said Monday, adding that she had not heard anything since then to change that understanding.
Im hopeful, she said. I have no reason to think it wont be included.
Newsoms office declined to comment on whether his budget will include the Medi-Cal expansion. The relatively small population of seniors who live in the state without legal immigration status means the cost of covering them estimated to be $121 million a year is a fraction of the states overall $215-billion budget. But Medi-Cal already covers a third of Californias residents, and critics of expanding the program argue it is already struggling with long wait times because of too few doctors who are willing to accept the states low reimbursement rates.

If the government does not exist to serve its citizens, the citizens are not morally obliged to pay taxes. They just need to weigh the odds and act accordingly, as if they were dealing with the mafia.
They’re going to have to TAX MORE
What the hell, Gavin, no pensions for them? How do you expect them to live a decent life. /sarc
The funny thing is that a lot of California citizens don’t have healthcare coverage. I know you will say, “What about ACA.” but facts are facts.
Everywhere its tried, taxing people into prosperity works, every time. /s
WHEN are the folks in California going to get enough of this and take their state back. I see all over the world where people are getting fed up but California seems to be speeding down the same disastrous track.
ffs !
Why not the entire world?
I would bet that Maria Elena Durazo is an anchor baby. If you trace her family history, you will find many illegals.
Her loyalty is to Mexico not the USA. She should be dealt with accordingly.
Dems really need to be framed as people who want everyone to be poorer.
Their only solutions to things are either banning them or taxing the living shiite out of them.
Gicen they always want to increase taxes as their typical only solution, it is fair to say dems want everyone to be poorer. It is also fair to say dems do not believe its right for you to keep your money, that other people deserve it more than you do.
Keep voting democrat..
Better never do this in Florida. California is always crazy. Of course they have a surplus thanks to trump. God forbid they save it.
The good ones that voted Dim are now moving into Texas by droves!!! (0k per year. How long before Texas is destroyed too?
should be 90k or so per year form Cali to TX.
California is a Mexican colony.
US citizens should get out while they can.
Why don’t they just strafe what’s left of the middle class in CaCa?
Because they're now outnumbered after decades of reckless chain immigration, many millions of illegal aliens etc. The middle class in CaCa was looted and decimated long ago.
The dirty little secret is California is only on the hook for 10% of the expansion, the feds (us) get hit for the rest.
There was a booth outside a shopping area today in Torrance, collecting signatures for recalling Newsome. Not optimistic about its prospects but I guess its better than inaction.
When you have total Dem control and majority of people who want free stuff, it makes it nearly impossible to take it back.
