Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said died on Friday evening, state media said early on Saturday. Qaboos, 79, had ruled the Gulf Arab state since he took over in a bloodless coup in 1970.
Qaboos had no children and had not publicly appointed a successor. A 1996 statute says the ruling family will choose a successor within three days of the throne becoming vacant.
If they fail to agree, a council of military and security officials, supreme court chiefs and heads of the two assemblies will put in power the person whose name has been secretly written by the sultan in a sealed letter.

“ Qaboos received primary and secondary education in Oman before going to Britain at age of 16. In 1960, he attended the British Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. After graduation, he joined the British army and served with a battalion for one year. Later, he went on an educational world tour.”

I worked for a 3-letter agency and did some work in Oman.
A friend of mine served in Oman for the US Government, and had a gardener with scars on his neck from wearing a slave collar as a boy, before Sultan Qaboos freed the slaves.
It is an undeniable badge of honor on him.

#4. Great minds think alike. I was going to write, and am doing it now, that when they found the sultan’s body, one of his staff said, “Oh man, Oman is dead, but I’m being redundant.”
Oman is my favorite country in the Middle East. Very accommodating to Westerners. Wonderful people. I’ve worked there since 2004.
I am proud that I had a hand in turning Muscat green when it had been a desert community. I designed the water reclamation plant that promoted extensive irrigation throughout the city.
What I have seen of Oman is Beautiful!
