Tom Brady posts he still has ‘more to prove’

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady all but confirmed his return to football next season with an Instagram post Wednesday morning.

In his post, Brady thanked fans by saying he is “grateful and humbled by the unconditional support” they’ve shown him over the past two decades. He acknowledged the Patriots organization for believing in him. And he indicated he’ll be back on the field soon, just days after the Pats’ season-ending, 20-13 loss to the Titans in the Wild Card round last weekend.

In both life and football, failure is inevitable,” Brady wrote. “You don’t always win. You can, however, learn from that failure, pick yourself up with great enthusiasm, and place yourself in the arena again. And that’s right where you’ll find me. Because I know I still have more to prove.”

Speculation over Brady’s football future has ramped up in recent weeks, as he is slated to become a free agent for the first time in his career come March. Brady agreed to a contract restructure last summer that served as a faux extension. It gave him a pay raise, prohibited the team from placing the franchise tag on him next season and tacked two years onto his current deal, all at the cost of the contract voiding on the final day of the 2019-20 league year. Meaning, if Brady and the Pats fail to renegotiate prior to March 18 at 4 p.m., he will hit the open market and the Patriots are off the hook for the money promised on the two “void years” left on his deal.

He should have quit when he was on top. Now I expect him to leave the sport a shadow of his former self.

You already got rid of the great backup that might be going to the SB.

Sign Brady for another year.

Even if he’s less than what he was, he’s still one of the best out there.

I think his supermodel wife will finally convince him to retire. After all, she is making over $40 million per year as a supermodel and spokesperson for multiple companies.

I hate to see him pull a Brett Farve or Johnny Unitas.

My hope is that he retires as a Patriot, and not try to go to another team.

He might have another year or two in him, though.

It think it’s premature to say he is a has-been right now.

The Patriots have had a lot of big problems this last half of the season, but the QB wasn’t one of them, IMHO.

They need to address these problems, and if addressed properly, we can all see if Brady still has his mojo.

I’m not ready to say he does or he does not, but Tom, we’re watching you....

A pissed-off Tom Brady is bad news for the rest of the NFL.

We have been watching history being made with the Patriots.

Love em or hate em, they know how to produce a super competitive team year after year.

They have their warts, and questionable tactics, but if you really look at the NFL theres a lot of “character issues” that are overlooked in the name of entertainment

Personally I’d like to see how Brady & Belichick do without each other. But I doubt that will happen.

“Because I know I still have more to prove.”

Uh...know (winner of 6 Super Bowls). Only to your own ego, Tom.

Muhammad Ali, Ray Leonard, Michael Jordan, John Unitas, Jerry Rice - the competitive mindset of the greatest usually doesn’t let them bow out gracefully. Brady’s got nothing left to prove - anyone who doesn’t think that he’s the best of all time is not going to be convinced by another season like 2019. He could go enjoy his life with his gorgeous wife and kids and his millions of dollars. But the greats usually don’t go out like that.

And good news for the Patriots (if they listen)

He should have quit when he was on top.

Indeed. He should have seen what we all see and retired after the last Super Bowl win. Go out on top and clear the way for Jimmy G. as starter. I think the Pats would be in great shape at this point.

Poor guy is in trouble. He feels fine physically, which is normal. But men in their 40’s have lost a bit of reaction time to men in their 20’s. By next season it will be worse.

It’s going to be embarrassing next year, we’ve seen this movie before.

He probably just realized how much his annual “home town” discount has been costing him all these years. Especially after this year’s waste of time. Probably thought to himself how he gave up that extra $15M to keep good players on this team when they had no playmakers on offense.

$20M × 20 years = $400M lifetime earnings.

Going rate for quarterbacks is $35M/year. But its too late for him to get one of those long term contracts now.
