Duncan Hunter resigns from Congress
Roll Call ^ | 1/7/20 | Chris Marquette

Posted on 01/07/2020 4:28:33 PM PST by jeannineinsd

Rep. Duncan Hunter submitted his resignation from Congress on Tuesday, marking the end of an 11-year stint in the House marred by his misuse of campaign funds for a variety of endeavors, including spending money on Lego sets, movie tickets, a $14,000 family vacation to Italy and flights for his family’s pet bunny rabbits.

In his resignation letters to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Hunter said his resignation would be effective Jan. 13. “It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years,” he wrote.

Hunter was first elected in 2008 to fill the seat previously held by his father, Duncan Lee Hunter, a Vietnam veteran who was elected to Congress in 1980. The younger Hunter served as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A crowded field of GOP candidates could emerge since California’s 50th congressional district is traditionally Republican. Trump carried the 50th District in northeastern San Diego County by 15 points in 2016 and Hunter won reelection by 3 points in 2018 despite facing the indictment.

Former Rep. Darrell Issa and former San Diego city councilmember Carl DeMaio — both Republicans — are running for Hunter’s seat. Issa retired from Congress after narrowly winning reelection in 2016, and DeMaio ran unsuccessfully against Democratic Rep. Scott Peters in the 52nd District in 2014.

Hunter’s 2018 Democratic opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, an official in former President Barack Obama’s administration, is running again in 2020. Hunter’s seat is on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s target list, but the race could be further out of Democrats’ reach without the beleaguered Hunter on the ballot.

I don't know what happens with this congressional seat. Will Democrat governor Newsom appoint his replacement?

Meanwhile, Pelosi blows through 25K government dollars a month for booze for her government jet. A jet that she has dispatched to take her kids places.

I’m sure this investigation into Duncan Hunter had no political origins. /s

Pelosi receiving letter: “I’d cry but the tears would mess up my eye makeup. Send him a regrets form letter with my electronic signature. And what was his name again?”

Governors only appoint senators. The seat will be vacant until the next election.

There can be a special election to fill the seat earlier. It might well depend on state lae.

If he had appreciated the trust, these issue would not have happened....................

Well, at least he did the honourable thing, as opposed to AOC or Omar or any other of that repulsive ilk.

And how likely Sacramento thinks a Pubbie will win. If they think R’s will hold it, and election law allows, they won’t call for a special election any time soon.

He let his Country down, he betrayed a trust, and he kicked his party in the teeth in the process.

Do Dems do worse things and get away with it? Of course, they're Dems.

We lose when GOPers go bad, and Mister Hunter would not want me on his jury.

The Governor will have 14 days from the 13th to set a date for a special election.

Special elections must be conducted on a Tuesday at least 126 days but no more than 140 days after the issuance of the proclamation.

Yep, when MO had a dem governor (Nixon) he took his time calling special elections he knew Republicans were likely to win.

Governor Newsome will have to call a new election, there is no appointment power.

For those of you excusing Hunter’s and family’s actions or equating them with Nancy Pelosi’s misdeeds, stop it. Theft, whether on our side or their’s is theft. Disappointed? Absolutely but Congressman Hunter must face the consequences of his poor choices.

Hunter is guilty of not knowing the right way in which to allocate money, or ignoring the right way.

Meanwhile reps like Congressman Elijah Cummings and his wife knackered away millions over the years with the help of their Maryland cronies. Mrs. Cummings was under investigation by the IRS.But the Dems almost always seem to get away with it.
