Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Republicans have enough votes to approve rules for President Trumps impeachment trial without agreeing to Democratic demands on witnesses.
The announcement Tuesday is a bid to force House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to transmit two articles of impeachment, allowing Trumps trial to begin.
We have the votes once the impeachment trial has begun to pass a resolution, McConnell said at a press conference.
All were doing here is saying were going to get started in exactly the same way that 100 senators agreed to 20 years ago [for Bill Clintons impeachment trial], McConnell said. Well get around to the discussion of witnesses [after the trial begins].
Trumps trial was expected to begin this week, but Pelosi withheld the articles to force McConnell to agree to call witnesses including White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
The Republican blueprint leaves the question of witnesses unsettled until after the trial begins, as done during the 1999 trial of Clinton.

So the negotiations with ‘Tough as Nails’ Pelosi are over?
LMAO. Im stealing that graphic.
If Bolton had something bad to say about Trump Bolton could get a media expert to create a major media bidding war to break the story.
There is no Bolton story.
Nancy can go pound sand. Holding impeachment hostage just blew up in her face.
Democrats chose.... poorly.
You need 67 votes to be convicted in the Senate.
Democrats are hoist on their own petard with a lousy case and no way to boot Trump.
They failed again!
“acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney”
Mike’s a well-paid gatekeeper/scheduler.
They wont get 67 votes. Not in this lifetime.
This is this Pauline peril of ramming through a partisan impeachment without building a bipartisan basis for it.
Theyre screwed whether or not they transmit their turd impeachment to the Senate.
On their face, the House articles are insufficient.
Article I
“Quo Quid Pro” Joe Biden called off the original Ukrainian Sherlock Holmes from Hunter’s Burisma dealings.
A “Quo Quid Pro” Trump would only be undoing Joe Biden’s nefarious handiwork by setting a new Sherlock Holmes on the Burisma case.
Convicting Trump would be as illogical as court-martialing and convicting Captain James Kirk for saving a planet from being held by Nazis.
Article II
President Trump has Amendment IV rights against unreasonable searches. A vindictive woman who is as white privileged as they can come needs to finally accept the 2016 will of the voters.
Great, let’s hear him say that under oath.
Tuco:
Stop talking and shoot, Mitch.
You need 51 votes to change the rules of the Senate - and summarily dismiss the impeachment charges, with prejudice.
Perhaps McConnell has those 51 votes now.
The Turtle has 53 votes locked up. Its a done deal.

Even Romnuts? I thought he was particularly upset that Trump talked Pompeo from running for the senate and vacating the Sec of State role (to him).
He said hell vote for the GOP rules but added he might want to hear from Bolton later.
All this is academic as long as House Democrats decline to show up for trial in the Senate.
Still not impressed with the Turtle Head. It might be different if he said he had the votes to dismiss.
