TRUMP’S SIN: CONDUCTING FOREIGN POLICY WITHOUT PERMISSION
Powerline ^ | January 6,2020 | BY STEVEN HAYWARD

Wildavsky, a sophisticated and pathbreaking political scientist, thought the matter quite simple:

The contempt hurled at President Reagan over the principles nearly agreed to at Reykjavik reveal the intellectual bankruptcy of his critics. . . One cannot but feel that much of the violent reaction to Reykjavik had no more substantial basis than the extreme pique felt by arms control intellectuals at not being consulted in advance. That was Ronald Reagan’s real sin in Iceland. For what, after all, was wrong with Reykjavik except that it lacked the imprimatur of the foreign policy establishment?

I tend to think the “deep state” talk is overdone (and is also distinct from the deeper constitutional problem expressed in the similar phrase “the administrative state”), but in this instance it might well be the right way to think about the freakout the foreign policy community is having over Trump’s decision to kill Soleimani. Trump didn’t have their permission!

Part of the checks and balances. Lets hope that Democrats remember this when their “guy” is in office. Nah, they won’t. They are f’n hypocrites and will bitch and whine if it happens to their guy.

They can impeach

The problem is with that is, it didn’t matter, he is still your president

At this point, President Trump has a license to do what he pleases

Nope - current War Powers Act says if he takes an action like he did, he has to notify the Congress of what he did - not ask permission...then he can continue operating for 60 days w/o consulting them.

He’s following the current “checks and balances” that are in place.

Ya I know. The WPA is a deviation from the normal process of war. It allows for temporary action by the President without consulting Congress.

I am perfectly fine with a president using force temporarily however the long term use of force, ie War, should be “checked” by Congress.

What, do you mean to say that Trump is denying himself the tactical brilliance of General Fancy Nancy in managing the middle eastern conflict?

Democrats cannot leak warnings toterrorists if they are left out of the loop, and that makes them mad.

The human waste who “testified” at the Schiff Witch Trials proved beyond doubt that our “foreign service” is corrupt beyond redemption.

We cannot wage this war in a defensive spirit. As our power and our resources are fully mobilized, we shall carry the attack against the enemy--we shall hit him and hit him again wherever and whenever we can reach him.

We must keep him far from our shores, for we intend to bring this battle to him on his own home grounds.

American armed forces must be used at any place in all the world where it seems advisable to engage the forces of the enemy. In some cases these operations will be defensive, in order to protect key positions. In other cases, these operations will be offensive, in order to strike at the common enemy, with a view to his complete encirclement and eventual total defeat.

Without permission.
Without a focus group.
Without following the Deep-State-Authored talking points.

QUESTION?? Was the president set up by Kerry? In 2018 kerry met with three Irans giving them advice ...as to what I don’t know but sure looks like collusion to bring down trump by trying to kill off the Stock market and rattling the country. FOLKS THIS BASTARD LIBERAL ANTIAMERICA ASSES HAVE BECOME DANGEROUS to our democracy!! They MUST be dealt with severely and quickly or else our nation DIES! With the presidential elections rapidly coming to sight it’s imperative we deal with these venomous enemy traitorous..starting with the squad!!

I believe more and more that the democrats were turning Iran into another Ukraine, i.e. another offshore money laundering operation. Their reaction indicates Trump hit their money middle-man.

I think Steven Hayward has put his finger on several key points. Two he gets right, and the third is a bit wrong, but that slight error could be corrected if he thinks again about the rest of what he's written, which is so true.

It's downright scary that talk about the Deep State (DS) (which I think he gets it wrong--talk about it is not overdone, but rather, underdone. Only out of the ignorance of those who live in climates very different from the Eskimos (ok, Inuit) could we languish in under-appreciation of the subtleties of their world. We can't imagine it, but the Inuit do have 50 words for various forms of dihydrous oxide near and below freezing. In like manner to Eskimos, the Deep State (DS) deserves appreciation (which is not to say high regard) for manifesting complexities that have in some cases been forged over centuries.

The author notes how presumably varied news emanating from dozens of outlets has instead come from one person (Ben Rhodes) to be the one behind so many other monotonic "news" outlets. He's like the AP, leading the way and "and [broadcast news] hasn’t varied much since. . ."

"Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems." Cut off one head and two others identical to the first will spring up in its place.

I would note a truly scary ingredient in that manifestation; one that the author mentions in passing but at which he doesn't linger to marvel. In its underlying workings, the DS does not allow, let alone encourage heterogeneity of thought. It has worked long and hard to maintain its inscrutability, unquestionability. It looks pre-packaged inside its attractive, unitary wrapper of unrelenting propaganda.

We saw its reflexive self-protective nature in its response to Tulsi Gabbard for her out-of-line impeachment vote, "present." This quashing of even well-intentioned deviation has been seen before, of course, often enviously expressed, that Democrats are "able to get things done" when in contrast, a typical gaggle of Republicans has devolved toward dithering rather than strongly responding to and supporting that plan or course of action that through hard-fought persuasion and consensus winning, no matter whatever quarter it may have grown up and whoever its champion may have been. In short, merit must win the debates.

The DS are apparently so sensitized to the potentially negative working of possibly conflicting information that they don't dare sample from multiple, potentially varied-yet-trusted sources. The DS's gods, the Clintons, have annointed their Solomon against whom no other kings' wisdom can stand.

The same said differently: they're as ripe as can be for murderous death camps that could be brought to them by a risen dictator.

In like manner to the currently somewhat-recognized coup conspirators that reveled in the anti-American activities throughout the Barry Administration, the DS's New World Order, when fully appreciated, only appears to be socialist when it's actually Communist, as ready as VA Governor Northam to confiscate guns from everyone but the police, military--and his bodyguards.
