The invasion wasn’t disastrous, and the occupation wasn’t botched. The invasion went perfectly. Given Western rules of engagement, which preclude the wholesale massacre of males conducted in antiquity by the Greeks, Romans and Persians alike, the right course of action would have been the destruction of the Iraqi army followed by a quick withdrawal. And a low cost hit-and-run punitive expedition would have been the right, though belated, punishment for Iraq’s invasion and occupation of Kuwait, as well as its sponsorship of terrorist groups like Abu Nidal and the PLO.

Since Bush ordered an occupation, it went about as well as you’d expect, given that the core of Iraq’s Sunni Arab male population had been left untouched by the invasion. While Bush’s rules of engagement were asinine, any occupation that fell short of razing villages* where GI’s were killed and forcibly relocating the villagers to new areas surrounded by other ethnicities/sects would have been unsuccessful.

* This was something done during the British occupation of Malaya, where the Brits had to deal with a similar recalcitrant population of a minority within a minority - ethnic Chinese who were inclined towards Communism. British rules of engagement were also notably looser than Bush’s.

If the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq had been remotely successful, we wouldn’t be seeing stories of all these senior Iranian military leaders roaming all over the place 10-15 years later.
