Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., called into "Your World with Neil Cavuto" Friday to discuss the deadly airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, saying he fears an "escalation" between the U.S. and Iran.
"I think without a declaration of war, without Congress and the American people behind it, what you get is a messy mission. You get a mission of escalating intermittent violence," Paul told Cavuto. "The president said he didn't want perpetual war in the Middle East. But he's adding more and more troops. If you don't want perpetual war, you don't keep sending more targets over there."
Paul believes it is more likely that "Iran, their militias and their proxies will attack the U.S." following the death of Soleimani.
President Trump accused the Iranian general of planning imminent and sinister attacks Friday in his first televised remarks since the airstrike that killed the general at Baghdad's international airport.
"We took action last night to stop a war, Trump said during brief remarks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. We did not take action to start a war.
Paul argued that that the airstrike signals the "death of diplomacy" with Iran and that they will feel the need to retaliate.
"It's hard to imagine that the Iranians are going to shrink now and say, 'Oh, you killed our leading general, who's been a leader in our country for 20 years, and we're going to do nothing,'" Paul said. "I also think with the death of Soleimani, you have the death of diplomacy. I don't think there's any chance that Iran will speak to us again on diplomacy."
Cavuto asked Paul what his "biggest fear" was about the situation.
"I think, that there will be an escalation, that there will be a war with Iran," Paul responded.

All those “Death to America” and “Great Satan” rallies didn’t clue you in before this?
And Senator Paul knows this as well. The senator has been one of President Trump's strongest supporters and is simply going on record as saying, "Let's follow the Constitution" which has consistently been Paul's position on every issue.
Oh so true. There just are not many Constitutional Conservative around any more. The NeoCon influence in the WH is alive and kicking.
No. Two so-called diplomats are dead.
Rand, diplomacy in the middle east died when Jimmy Carter allowed the Iranian Thugs to take over our embassy and personnel for a year.
I’m very glad DJT is our prez., and not R.P. The guy is as off as his old man.
Wrong, Trump, Jared, etal have had amazing success in diplomacy with Sunni nations and with Israel.
Do you recall the aftermath of the Vietnam cut and run? The millions of deaths, the shambles of American foreign policy, the Soviets running amok world wide? Do you recall how Nixon had nearly completed the Vietnamization and how we were nearly out with a relatively stable Indochina? As wrong as our presence in Iraq is, as Trump has said for years, there is a right and a wrong way out.
I like him a lot. He puts the Constitution and the Country first. The Middle East is a no win situation for any President.
Unfortunately, the Kenyan made winning there much harder with his treachery. So now, the next President has to deal with a more emboldened enemy there.
There's a new sheriff in town and he's doing things differently than the last bunch of appeasers in the Obama administration.
Muslims feed on weakness. The only thing they understand is strength.
President Trump is showing them strength.
Indeed. Oh that we had more Constitutional Conservatives representing us.
And oh that we had more citizens claiming to be Conservative that understood and appreciated the Constitution as Senator Paul does.
No right, there will be no peace in ME, ever.
[Oh, bullsh*t. Senator Paul is simply saying we need to follow the Constitution. “Follow the Constitution” has consistently been Paul’s steadfast answer to every position.]

We don’t need no stinking diplomacy.
Middle East diplomacy has always been by the edge of the sword.
Was diplomacy working?
Diplomacy dead? How can we tell that?
Actually, the terrorists are dead, Rand, not diplomacy.
