On 30 December, 2019, Jack Wilson, the congregant of the West Freeway Church of Christ, in White Settlement, Texas, who stopped the attack, gave a lengthy, on-camera interview of what happened from his point of view.
I first found the interview on the bigcountry.com website. A few hours later, it was posted on Youtube.com as from KETKnbc. The video interview is 18 minutes and 44 seconds long, done at Jack's private range.
The video is professionally done. Peculiarly, I have not found who the interviewer is. She is an attractive, tall, well dressed black woman with an incredible voice. I was unable to identify her in spite of my best efforts. Perhaps a knowledgeable reader will be able to aid in identification so proper attribution can be given.
The interview is in-depth. It covers Jack's training methods at his range, the church shooting, and the formation of the church volunteer security team.

The interview is in-depth. It covers Jack's training methods at his range, the church shooting, and the formation of the church volunteer security team. Jack Wilson gives details about how he acclimates new shooters to gun handling. He shows the range layout and explains some of his policies on defensive tactics for the church security team.
The reader finds out, for example, the security team was formed about 18-19 months ago, when the church moved to its present location in White Settlement.

What other “side of the story” is there? Is someone (other than the totally evil Shannon Watts and her ilk) claiming he shouldn’t have been able to kill the a$$hole?

I knew I'd heard the name Jack Wilson somewhere before. (Jack Palance character in 1953 movie "Shane.")
I’m in love with that interviewer!
The woman reporter in the Jack Wilson interview is Mye Owens–a field reporter for KETK Fox-51
Can anyone confirm this?
I didn’t know the other fighter’s name in the Eastwood movie. Thanks for that bit of cinema lore.
Bttt
So let me offer you another perspective.
Many churches have adopted the unbiblical idea that everyone is welcome and that the church shouldnt stop anyone from entering the auditorium.
This guy had on a wig and fake beard with a 3/4 length coat and they let him roam around the church?
This is a symptom of the PC culture that has invaded many churches.
Their poor theology helped them to overlook someone with obvious nefarious intentions. I bet he even got a nice visitor parking spot up in the front row.
Very seeker sensitive, The church was sensitive to him seeking someone to shot. Too soon?
According to the video that church has a great training program for their security team but that was offset by unbiblical theology that allowed a guy they had spotted as a threat to enter in the auditorium (fish in a bowl).

One thing that was immediately obvious in the first available videos of the event was the third discharge of the perp's shotgun. AFAIK, this has yet to be discussed on FR.
On the available (reverberating) audio, it is difficult -- if not impossible -- to distinguish Wilson's one pistol shot by sound alone. That's because it occurred essentially simultaneously with what appeared to be a spasmodic reaction of the perp that caused him to pull the trigger a third time. (If anything, that combined sound pulse seemed "louder" than the previous two.)
On the video, one frame of the perp shows a bright flash at the instant that Wilson's pistol fires. It appears to be directed slightly upward -- as if the nervous system spasm reaction to the head shot caused the perp's arms and hands to contract -- raising the muzzle and triggering the discharge. In the next two frames, the shotgun muzzle continues (uncontrolled) upward to a vertical position.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are studies concluding that that head shots entail elevated risk of spasmodic discharge. OTOH, this example reinforces the premise that disconnecting the CNS definitely terminates a deadly threat.
Where feasible, I would expect "Mozambique Drill" (with minimal/no "pause") training to serve well toward that end...
YMMV...

Great interview.

The NY mayor Bloomberg, for one.
Good point.
I organized the ushers in my church 20 years ago. Part of the written job description included a brief history of the underground Church in the 1st Century A.D. of the Roman Empire. The ushers were the gatekeepers/ watchmen on the wall. There was real concern that the congregations would be infiltrated by informers, or worse. This history needs to be revisited in all churches today.

A recent church shooting in Texas has caused concerns for many of us and that's why a local gun shop is hosting free active shooter classes, specifically to holy spaces.
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI)- A recent church shooting in Texas has caused concerns for many of us and that's why a local gun shop is hosting free active shooter classes, specifically to holy spaces.
During the Texas shooting, a man singlehandedly took down the gunman.
Steve Ellis, the owner of Top Guns tell us that's the reason there were not more casualties. It's one of the many reasons he wants churches to be more proactive in these types of threats.
"If we are putting ourselves in a position that there could be an emergency then I feel like it doesn't hurt to take the steps to train ourselves so that we're better prepared to handle that emergency," Ellis explained.
Ellis told News 10 that there has been more interest from the public to participate in firearm training.
"We are going to have people that are evil and much as we would learn CPR or learn to use a fire extinguisher there are several people who have also taken it upon themselves to learn to be able to defend themselves and others," Ellis said.
Top Guns has provided these training classes for years but wanted to reintroduce them with the most recent shooting.
In the class, you will be taught how to identify a threat, determine teams for outside and inside security, and much more.
The training is free and there are multiple dates you can attend.
January 9th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
January 15th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
January 23rd, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
January 29th, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
