Germany Puts Its Head in Russia's Energy Pipeline Noose
The Gatestone Institute ^ | December 30, 2019 | Soeren Kern

Posted on 12/30/2019 8:22:33 AM PST by yoe

A report by the Swedish Defense Research Agency found that Russia has threatened to cut energy supplies to Central and Eastern European more than 50 times. Even after some of those states joined the European Union, Russian threats continued.

Not surprisingly, Germany's current Social Democratic Foreign Minister, Heiko Maas, has criticized the U.S. sanctions as foreign interference. "Decisions on European energy policy are made in Europe, not the USA," he tweeted on December 12. "We fundamentally reject foreign interventions and sanctions with extraterritorial

effects." U.S. President Donald Trump, like his predecessor Barack Obama, has opposed the pipeline project. Trump in particular has criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her refusal to increase defense spending while at the same time supporting the pipeline that will funnel billions of dollars to Russia.... "So, we're supposed to protect you against Russia and you pay billions of dollars to Russia and I think that's very inappropriate. Germany will have almost 70 percent of their country controlled by Russia with natural gas. You tell me, is that appropriate?" — U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

The point is: " Opponents of the pipeline warn that it will give Russia a stranglehold over Germany's energy supply. Proponents counter that with European domestic natural gas production in rapid decline, the pipeline will enhance security of supply."

Trump signed into law the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act last week. The law placed sanctions on any company involved in laying the pipes under the Baltic Sea between Germany and Russia.

Proponents counter that with European domestic natural gas production in rapid decline, the pipeline will enhance security of supply.

Question: is their natural gas production in decline due to dwindling supply, or for other reasons? The article doesn't say why it is in decline.

Why does Germany need Natural Gas in the first place?? With Global Warming they don’t need it for heat obviously, and they are on board with the Green New Deal, so why are they trying to KILL THE PLANET with these deadly “fossil fuels”??

Just like a no good wife, you have to cut her loose to fend for herself.

But if you try to force her to your way, you are going to jail.

It’s no longer any of our business who Germany chooses to sleep with.

Get over it.

Move on.

That’s nearly as poor planning as having a high-tech military dependent on components manufactured by an adversarial nation.

Last week, the companies in the pipe-laying contract (all non-Russian)....kinda quit what they were doing and evaluating the problem. What the Russian investors have said is that Russian pipelayers could be brought up and take over the job. You have to wonder what this means in terms of quality. The Russian companies wouldn’t care about Trump’s threat....if anything, they’d appreciate it because they got more business now.

One other obvious thing that people miss....is that all of this is a commercial contracts. There is no German or Russian government money in the pipeline deal. It goes to natural gas companies in Germany, and mostly European banks who into the speculation deal.

“You have to wonder what this means in terms of quality.”

Likely far better than the EU Union workers who have little experience at it. Sure, the Norwegians are OK but maybe not big enough.

Energy pipelines are an advanced and mature industry in Russia. And their steel is good.

You had 20% of your power from nuclear plants 8 years ago.

Now you have to pay Russia for it.

The then-Soviet/Western Europe gas pipeline was a bone of contention between Thatcher and Reagan, too.

Thatcher wanted the pipeline jobs to feed her economy.

Reagan was rightly concerned about the USSR and impact on NATO countries.
