I just watched it a few more times. The first person shot while attempting to draw from behind his back was about 10 feet away, and looked like he was over 50 years old.

I’m over 50 and couldn’t close that distance with someone who already had their weapon out and pointed at me.

I'm not going to watch again, but the way I remember it was that the shooter had the gun pointed at the guy he asked the question to, and then only turned toward the first defender while they attempted to draw. You are probably right though, a charge would probably have been ineffective.

I have been influenced though with some training videos some guy posted here on the forums some time back about how fast a perp can make up the ground between you and him before you could get a shot off. It is scary and why they teach officers to shoot to kill, no warning shot. And shoot many times.
