“While there were some converts, you are referencing a common trope about the Khazars that is used to delegitimize the European Jewish settlers of Israel...” Etc

I’m not sure of this and don’t know anything of this sort of “inside baseball” stuff on who is a legitimate Jew or whatever.

Personally I don’t know how descendents of converts of a thousand years ago would be any less Jewish than anyone else, it goes back so far.

Oh please! No Fish Friday was a discipline for all Catholics to be reminded of our mortality. It also happened to be good brain food. The nuns at my time had a vocation to serve God in whatever capacity they were guided to. Vocations are different from the professional minded clergy of today. As far as a ruler used for whatever reason, we knew it was generally not without cause. Rebellion comes in many forms for all growing children. How does one conclude that Catholic children, taught by nuns, are more rebellious than any other adolescent?

American Jews were very dominant in basketball in the 50’s, and there were also more than a few Jewish boxers who did well.

I understand.

But it’s not really like that and the casual acceptance of the Khazar myth/trope is not good for Israel in this era of rising anti-Semitism.

While descent is matrilineal (Jewish mother equals Jewish children), some priestly castes/tribes are identified by last names and are patrilineal.

Jews are self-identified, but it’s not a casual manner of saying ‘I’m Jewish’. Heritage is of prime importance, as is having been raised in a Jewish home, which is the province and responsibility of the Jewish mother. Women not born of Jewish mothers undergo several years of study and months of ritual before being accepted as a convert. Men, as well, but I’m less familiar with this as, in my experience, there are more women who covert than men. I’m not talking about the modern, liberal, reformed Jews, but about Conservative Jews who live a Jewish life and while not Hassidic, consider themselves Orthodox.

A Jew-by-birth can likely tell you their tribe. The men of the priestly tribes have specific religious duties/privileges within the synagogue and throughout the liturgical year. Some Jewish names denote jobs within the community that have religious components independent of tribe.

Dan is the tribe of the mass of Jews, the ordinary ones without religious duties and privileges.

This connection to the Land of Israel is the prime claim Jews have on the modern State of Israel. The Muslims contend we are just European converts with no blood ties to the ancient land and the secular anti-Semites use that to deligitimize the religious origins of Israel as a Jewish State.

For a people who have been evicted from nearly every country in Europe at one time or another, the existence of Israel as a homeland where we cannot be turned away is beyond important.

Further, the Old Testament describes many ancient Jews as red-haired and fair skinned. Semites are historically Caucasian and this includes the Arabs.

How know? Long, and wide experiences. Catholic educated, many kids and grand kids and Catholic educators. Sme secular school experiences.

And what is basis for your skepticism?

Hebrew is not a pictographic language.

Structurally it is very similar to any western language most of whose alphabets are based in some part iin Hebrew.

In fact, the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet are “aleph” and “bet”.

Sorry for any typos . Using an iPhone without my readers.

It's a simple matter of evolution & natural selection.

A satisfactory worldly explanation for the soulishly ignorant perspective.

“self serving phrases like ‘chosen people’.”

The phrase isn’t a product of persecution, it comes directly from the Bible, e.g. in Deuteronomy 7 and 14 and Exodus 19. In my experience, it hasn’t served the self at all, but quite the contrary. Secular Jews tend to devote themselves to running away from it.

If you accept the authority of the Source, you understand it as a mission statement, not as a badge of superiority. If you don’t accept Its authority, than the phrase should be meaningless to you.

FWIW, Hebrew is unlike any other language, in that it is sourced spiritually, originally. It is called the flaming language.

The other languages are soulish first.

Catholics commonly ate fish on Fridays but there wasn’t actually a requirement to eat fish—just a prohibition against eating meat (the flesh of animals or birds, but the flesh of fish for some reason was not considered meat).

It was warm blooded versus cold blooded. That was how they defined the rule for Fridays..

Strictly speaking, see Gen 10:3. Sons of Noah to Japheth to Gomer to Ashkenaz.

There are some foolish websites attributing the last part of the name to “NAZI” as in WWII political party, if you see those, skip them.

Recent groups may have been named by others in the Rhineland and Central East European theater. Appears the lineage is traceable from present to around 600 AD, perhaps to the Diaspora, but difficult otherwise, as it became very convoluted in the 7th-8th centuries with the Central European bloodlines.

Never heard about the warm-blooded vs. cold-blooded rule. So frogs' legs would be OK?

I saw a program once about the capybara, the largest living species of rodent, common in parts of South America. They said that because the animal spends so much time in the water, the local people decided it was a fish so it was OK to eat it on Fridays.

Frog’s legs were fine under the Friday rule. They taste wonderful when paired with tomato and a lot of garlic, known as Frog’s Legs Provencal.

"...The very study of the Torah is an exercise in considering every question — no matter how sacrosanct — from every possible alternative perspective. The Torah is politely referred to as “the book of questions” but less reverentially as “the book of arguments.” One of the lessons of Torah study is that no one perspective is ever superior to the others unless and until you make a convincing and rational argument that it is...."

Ooops. I meant to write Talmud, not Torah. Sorry for the mix-up.
