Israel has refused entry to nearly 6,000 Russians this year as it attempts to contain the increase in asylum applications from Russian travelers, the Haaretz newspaper reported Thursday.
Israeli officials have noted a surge in asylum requests from Russian citizens in recent years, leading officials to triple the number of times they denied entry to Russian citizens in 2018.
Officials at Israels Ben Gurion Airport refused entry to 5,700 Russians in 2019, according to Haaretz. Russias Embassy in Israel placed that figure at 5,771 last week.
Thats up from 4,355 refusals in 2018, according to Haaretz.
These large numbers of denied entries create disquiet on both sides, Shlomo Mor Yosef, the head of Israels Interior Ministrys Population and Immigration Authority, was quoted as saying.
Haaretz noted that the situation has further been complicated by Russias jailing of Israeli-American citizen Naama Issacher on drug charges in November, as well as dozens of cases last week of Israeli nationals being held up on arrival in Moscow airports.
Israel turned down 180 asylum requests in the two months since it adopted new rules expediting asylum denials for Russian nationals, Haaretz reported.
Israel reportedly adopted similar expedited asylum processing rules for Ukrainian and Georgian nationals two years ago.
We managed to deal with the Ukrainians and the Georgians and now we have begun with the Russians, Mor Yosef was quoted as saying.

Any comment from our radical open border lobby in congress?
Are these people Jews? I thought that all Jews had a legal right to live in Israel.
Russians are leaving little Putin’s paradise in droves. Russians I know are trying to get familiy members out to Europe or here.
My first question, also. Really strange that the article is written without providing that answer.
Russia and Israel both want and benefit from trade and tourism. How to screen put a few enemy agents or bad actors is the key question.
People seeking asylum should not pick and choose what county they want to go to. It should be like the NFL draft. People should declare themselves ready for asylum, and then let the countries choose who they want. To me, this is far more equitable. Maybe countries can even trade asylum seekers for an asylum seeker to be hated later, etc.
there’s already way too many Russians, and Russian fake “Jews” in Israel already
The new “Sudenten” Germans?
It’s because Putin and his butt buddies have turned Russia into the Mexico of Europe and more and more Russians want to escape the corrupt, poverty ridden, dumpy shithole Russia is becoming. (Potemkin villages like St. Petersburg notwithstanding)
They are either not Jews or havent tried to establish identity as Jews.
Israeli Leftists like to bring non-Jews into Israel by hook or by crook to counter the rising population of religious Jews.
Israeli news resource YNET is quoting an official document it had obtained from the Israeli office in charge of population and immigration statistics, which reports that around 180 thousand new immigrants came to Israel under the auspices of the Law of Return since 2012, but that only 14% of them are actually Jewish.
Good article worth reading, discussing how widespread cheating of the Law of Return has poisoned modern Israel.
Haaretz is a left-wing paper. If it identified these people as not Jewish, it would harm the narrative that Israel is evil. Hence, the silence. If they were Jews and denied entry, Haaretz would lead with that fact and again portray Israel as evil for turning its back on fellow Jews.
My guess while reading the article was that many of these might be non-Jewish Russians using Israel as maybe the first available escape point. And I’ve often read that any Jew in the world has a right to immigrate to Israel.
I’ve heard of Haaretz left-wing leanings. But they should definitely have told their readers whether any Russian Jews were being denied asylum. Left a lot of questions hanging. Sloppy reporting, or intentionally vague.
Thanks for posting. Apparently a LOT of people, even here, rely on the our media for what to believe.
People in Hong Kong have strong GDP to boast of and even better material living standards than Russians.
Doesn’t mean they’re happy under China’s thumb.
Same goes for how many feel under Putin.
Simple as that.
“” “” Ive heard of Haaretz left-wing leanings. But they should definitely have told their readers whether any Russian Jews were being denied asylum. “” “”
These ‘asylum seekers’ are mostly 20-somethings who believe in a propaganda similar to that in the post #10.
Eussian Israli Jews love Netentahu.
Russian.
