McConnell hit for impeachment coordination with Trump – but Dems did the same with Clinton

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has come under fire from Democrats, and at least one Republican, for his coordination with the White House on the pending impeachment trial in the Senate — but the outrage overlooks the fact that Democrats took a similar approach with President Bill Clinton during his 1999 impeachment trial.

McConnell, R-Ky., stirred a hornets’ nest when he told Fox News’ Sean Hannity earlier this month that he will be “coordinating” with the White House and that “there will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this.” […]

But whether or not Senate leaders should be coordinating with the White House, McConnell is appearing to follow a precedent set during the 1999 Clinton impeachment.

According to then-Washington Post reporter Peter Baker’s book, “The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson Clinton,” Senate Democrats coordinated with the White House on a number of impeachment-related issues behind the scenes.

According to Baker, one of those arrangements involved White House Counsel Charles Ruff arranging a “secret signal” with Democratic leadership. If Ruff wanted to rebut anything from the Republican House managers, something rules didn’t allow for, he pre-arranged with then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle’s aides for a senator to submit a question to then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist asking the White House to respond.

Aides reportedly would “fill in the name” of one of several “default senators” — such as Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and then-Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn. — who had agreed to allow themselves to “be used in this way.” …

If the Senate and President Trump are in lockstep in now destroying the communists Democrats, America has a chance. This is a critical time in American history with a communists overthrow possible. Wake up America and wake up the Republicans that the time to fight is almost over.

Do you think the Democrat will hold the House majority after 2020?

I certainly hope not, but there's always that chance. Here in formerly-conservative Orange County, CA I have no idea if there is a Republican candidate for my district. Can the RNC be trusted to support enough candidates that can win back seats from the dems? Will they fund their campaigns properly? Or will they depend on the grass roots folks to do all the heavy lifting?

I hope not. But who knows. If they keep the House majority and Trump wins 2020, they’ll keep right at it. As the Speaker said, they’ve been working on impeachment for 2 1/2 years, yet their impeachment charges (so far) cover something that happened this fall. Frankly the more they charge, the more foolish they look.

Since it was “My way (Democrat) or the highway” in the Democrat led House, Republicans should run the Senate THEIR way!

Of course they did.

It's never about the hypocrisy. It's always about knowing that the Republicans back down and compromise when challenged by the Democrats.

Questioning Republicans for doing the same thing Democrats did is how they extract concessions from the Republicans.

Pelosi’s impeachment is a joke. I say let the Senate poke her in the eye with it. Dem senators running in ‘20 must recuse, Dems get no say in any of it. Heck, don’t even let them watch.

Coordinate, coordinate, coordinate. Give them nothing, just like they gave you in the congress. Mop the floor with them.
