Sisolak promised to ban assault rifles. Now, he admits he doesn’t know what that term means

If you want a perfect encapsulation of the false promise of gun control and the duplicity of many of its advocates, look at Gov. Steve Sisolak.

When Sisolak was running for governor last year, he put out an ad describing his reaction to the Oct. 1 massacre. As somber music played, he described walking through the shooting site and starting the victims’ fund.

“But, you know, money won’t stop the next massacre,” Sisolak said in the ad. “Not when Donald Trump protects the NRA, and Adam Laxalt won’t enforce background checks. When I’m governor, we’re going to ban assault rifles, bump stocks, silencers.”

The implication was clear. Republicans would rather pander to the gun lobby than protect innocent people. Sisolak, his voice filled with moral condescension, would — by banning “assault rifles” — save lives.

Just one problem. Sisolak now admits he doesn’t even know what an assault rifle is.

I have never seen a DOD proposal for a new ‘assault rifle’

I have seen DOD proposals for a new Squad Automatic Weapons and Crew served machineguns.

Never have I seen a proposal for an assault rifle.

I suspect what you have seen is news articles talking about military weapons as assault rifles.

“Definition of an assault rifle;
Any rifle which is used to assault someone...” [shelterguy, post 3]

Wrong.

The military establishment did construct a formal definition:

Individual weapon, fires from a closed bolt, feeds from detachable box magazines, selective fire, cartridge of intermediate power.

This appears in a US DoD publication bearing the title “Dictionary of Military Terms and Expressions” or something like that. Or it used to. Not sure it’s still in print.

Thus submachine guns are excluded, as they fire pistol cartridges and most are open-bolt systems.

Anything belt-fed is ruled out. Also all crew-served systems.

“Intermediate” is a bit vague. Makes sense only in comparison with small arms of World War Two: eighty years ago, the major powers armed their common soldiery with rifles firing cartridges of 0.30 to 0.32 inch bore diameter, developed between 1885 and 1906, boasting effective ranges up to 2000 yards (one nautical mile). Kinetic energies of these projectiles typically exceeded 2000 foot-pounds by comfortable margins. The community of civilian gun enthusiasts generally terms such arms “main battle rifles.”

Early assault rifle cartridges fired bullets of the same bore diameter but lighter weight, at reduced muzzle velocities, to effective ranges of perhaps 350 to 500 yards. Kinetic energies ranged from 1300 to 1550 foot pounds - well above typical pistol rounds (300 to 400 foot pounds), slightly below kinetic energies of 6.5mm military rifle rounds, close to American “deer rifles” (like 30-30 or 35 Remington), well below battle rifles (303 British, 30-06, 7.92mm Mauser).

...An assault rifle is a true military weapon, capable of burst or fully-automatic fire. And those already are illegal/extremely difficult to get...

And making them hard to get is a complete affront to the 2A. One of the purposes of the 2A is to assure that the US has a widely-dispersed, unorganized militia ready to take on any foreign invaders. Or ready to resist home-grown tyranny.

Well, admission of ignorance is supposedly the beginning of wisdom. Let’s keep an eye on this guy.

Not saying I necessarily believe it!

“Sadly, it is becoming the rule, not the exception.”

It’s always been the rule. “How do you tell a politician is lying? His lips are moving.” has been a truism for as long as there have been politicians.

ONLY reason we can even sort of trust President Trump is because he’s not a politician, at least not yet.

[[“I don’t have enough of an intimate knowledge about exactly what an assault rifle is,”]]

Here lemme help: An ‘assault rifle’ is a any rifle that walks itself out the door, then down the street, and then punches an innocent bystander in the face for no good reason-

His whole problem is the term “assault rifle” has an explicit definition and all assault rifles, except for the few that were legally registered before the middle of 1986, are banned from the possession of everybody but certain military and law enforcement personnel. IOW, if he were honest, he’d either have to admit he’s trying to ban something that’s already banned or admit he’s trying to obtain a far broader ban.

Remember when National Guard armories were a burglary target for lefties?

Shades Of Huey Long:

“When I was a boy I would get up at six o’clock in the morning on Sunday and I would hitch our old horse up to the buggy and I would take my Catholic grandparents to mass. I would bring them home, and at ten o’clock I would hitch the old horse up again, and I would take my Baptist grandparents to church.”
Later that night, the political boss complimented Huey as they headed back to Baton Rouge. “Why Huey, you’ve been holding out on us. I didn’t know you had any Catholic grandparents.”
“Don’t be a damned fool,” shot back Huey. “We didn’t even have a horse.”
How can you not love that?

Politicians want to take your guns because they are planning to do something that you would shoot them for doing.

Look at Virginia.

I was the primary small arms instructor at The Basic School in Quantico for two years, and my course materials weren’t newspaper articles.

I will defer to your first hand knowledge but stand by my reference to proposals by the DOD.

I have never seen a proposal to arms manufacturers for a replacement assault rifle.
