ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, MARYLAND Flanked by two fighter jets and in front of a giant American flag, President Trump on Friday signed the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act that officially created the Space Force, the sixth and first new military branch since 1947.
For the first time since Truman, we will create a brand new American military service, Trump said. You will witness the birth of the Space Force. Thats a big moment and were all here for it.

they are getting away from that concept by placing hundreds of very small, very cheap, quickly launched satellites to do the same job. Redundancy.
NASA is part of DOD.
Every branch of service has some kind of “space” organization. It makes sense to combine them as Space Force does. Anyone familiar with space combat knows that there is far more going on in space than the other branches.

Supporting mobile units over vast distances. The Air Force is accustomed to that.
I just remembered way back to an old Government class where the teacher made the point that it was always easier to create a new bureaucracy than fix an existing one.

Worth every minute of freeper attention.
Steven Kwast would disagree with you. The mission of the Air Force can be modified and generals can be fired. But that is only for the military application. There are other organizations that have a piece of the strategy: NASA being one. That is why a military service isn’t needed. You need a national strategy to push what we already have.
“Steven Kwast would disagree with you”
Doesn’t matter if he disagrees with me. He was outvoted by the people who do matter.
Since his curriculum vitae doesn’t show him having ever been involved in USAF Space Command I don’t know why his opinion is particularly special where space is involved.
USAF wasn’t interested in using its funds for Space Command. In order to see that the Space Force is funded and run properly it was spun off.
