Mitch McConnell on Thursday threatened to cancel Donald Trump's impeachment trial in the Senate if 'scared' Nancy Pelosi doesn't send over the formal articles of impeachment against the president.
The speaker and the Senate Republican leader went to war over the next steps in the impeachment process as Pelosi slammed McConnell as a 'rogue leader' - and he blasted her articles as 'slapdash' and 'unfair.'
The dispute exploded into the open the morning after Democrats voted to impeach Trump, with the president bragging he was going to win the whole thing by 'default.'
'If the Do Nothing Democrats decide, in their great wisdom, not to show up, they would lose by Default!,' Trump argued on Twitter of his upcoming Senate trial, which is now in doubt.
Pelosi has to 'transmit' the articles of impeachment and appoint 'managers' to prosecute the president - but offered no timeline on when she would do that, saying she wanted to see the Senate's plan for a 'fair trial,' effectively holding the articles over McConnell and Trump's heads.
McConnell, who previously said he wanted to hold the trial in January, responded: 'It's beyond me how the Speaker and Democratic Leader in the Senate think withholding the articles of impeachment and not sending them over gives them leverage.
'Frankly, I'm not anxious to have the trial. If she thinks her case is so weak she doesn't want to send it over, throw me into that briar patch.'

That’s the most rational observation of this situation as I’ve seen.
If anyone can figure out a way around it, it is McConnell.

The Dims just supplied the Republican party with endless ammunition.
Being afraid to transmit articles preserves only their base and alienates the entire rest of the country.
And today Dims are DESPERATE to preserve their base. They know they have lost everyone else.

The Speedy Trial Clause of the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution provides that “[i]n all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy trial”
The Clause protects the defendant from delay between the presentation of the indictment or similar charging instrument and the beginning of trial.
It would be nice if Daily Mail could write titles a little shorter. I post a lot of their articles but the titles are too long-winded.

Pelosi has to decide if she wants to move forward and it isn’t McConnell’s and Trump’s problem.
The Democrats own impeachment and this is their tar baby. THEY voted for it.
McConnell should remind Nancy which house she runs and say that Senate will not decide on the rules for the impeachment trial until after the House delivers the impeachment to the Senate.
This is NOT a criminal trial and the 6th does not apply.
The “scared” narrative is catching hold and we need to constantly hammer this point. Messaging is everything.
hopefully McConnell will do just that, refuse to take up the fake articles of impeachment.
i wanted PDJT to have his opportunity to defend himself in the Senate, especially after the abortion of proper procedure in the House
but
since there’s zero evidence of any wrong-doing, anyway
(and since the first article attempts to charge him with an action which, HAD HE DONE IT, would have been proper under both statutory and constitutional law..................and since the second charge isn’t even an impeachable offense had it any basis in fact)
I think its pretty obvious to almost everyone that the House Dems have made asses of themselves
and... PDJT has a full year now to deal with any fallout
Dear Senator McConnell, do it! Or rather, hold a one hour impeachment trial and dismiss the fake charges and put it to a merciful rest. Then, go out on the front steps and flush the impeachment charges down a toilet (for the sake of the tv networks! let’s see if they try to censor you off the air if you do this! ha ha)

I heard Romney talk a few days ago..he said whatever McConnell wants to do he’s in full agreement..I dont think he goes along with this sh*t show to get rid of Trump..he knows what he would mean to his re-election in Utah..remember he and President Trump met a few weeks ago said they had a nice chat
Definitely a way to hobble DJT or even force him to sign off on things he would have no intention of approving. Yertle got very very important now, and that's not reassuring.
