Where I live in Pittsburgh the troops were often affiliated with particular churches.
There was a Catholic troop, a Presbyterian troop, a Methodist troop, etc. The churches generally provided meeting space and material support.

Our troop in NC had Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Mormons and Jews. The Methodist church sponsored the troop. Things went well because we had such a great Scoutmaster. That is until the Church got a new pastor who decreed that the Scoutmaster must be a member of the church. Our nice little ecumenical movement disintegrated.
