Trump on track to become third U.S. president to be impeached

WASHINGTON - Republican Donald Trump is this week likely to become the third U.S. president to be impeached when the Democratic-led House of Representatives votes on charges stemming from his effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden.

Trump faces one charge of abusing his power by asking Ukraine to investigate Biden, a leading Democratic contender to oppose him in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and one of obstructing Congress’ investigation into the matter.

The president has denied wrongdoing and accused Democrats of a baseless and politically-motivated bid to oust him from power.

No U.S. president has been removed as a direct result of impeachment.

Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before he could be removed, while Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton were impeached by the House, respectively in 1868 and 1998, but not convicted by the Senate.

Democrats argue impeachment is an urgent necessity because Trump has continued his alleged misconduct, endangering the integrity of the 2020 election.

Republicans have defended Trump and accused Democrats of a partisan effort aimed at overturning his upset 2016 victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump has branded the entire impeachment drive a sham.

“READ THE TRANSCRIPTS! The Impeachment Hoax is the greatest con job in the history of American politics!” he said in a tweet on Monday.

Trump has alleged the Bidens were involved in corruption in Ukraine and should be investigated there, but has offered no evidence. Biden, a former U.S. vice president, has denied wrongdoing.

And the only one to be re-elected!

The vote to impeach Bill Clinton was on December 19, 1998. The vote to impeach Trump will be Wednesday (18th) or Thursday, December 19, 2019. Hmmmmm.

BTW, the vote to impeach Clinton was largely on party lines. There were a few defectors on each side, but it was hardly a bipartisan impeachment.

And yet, the Democrats demand that Trump bring forward exculpatory evidence to prove he isn’t guilty of withholding military aid to pressure Ukraine into investigating Biden for corruption, even though we have video evidence of Biden bragging about getting a prosecutor fired. Trump is guilty until proven innocent. Biden is innocent no matter what and cannot be investigated because he’s a potential nominee for president. The double standards boggle my mind.

You make an excellent point that I noticed myself but hasn’t been talked about much. The Democrats claim they have to impeach because the president wouldn’t release requested documents and kept executive branch personnel from appearing as witnesses.

Representative Schiff is essentially claiming the constitution’s impeachment provisions are absolute and the Congress has unlimited oversight power over the executive branch. However, the Bill of Rights amends the constitution’s provisions, including impeachment. Unless one argues the 4th through 6th amendments don’t apply to the president (or didn’t modify the impeachment power), a president has the same rights as any other citizen.

nixon was run out of power by the deep state... just like they are trying to do to Trump... the only difference is they won’t be able to convince Trump to fall on his own sword like they did Nixon.

Nixon actually did break the law-he had people spied on and behaved like one of the mafia capos/dons he liked to hang out with-I became old enough to vote for Nixon when he ran for a 2nd term-I was really disappointed in him-but not enough to vote for Carter over Ford. Pres Trump has not broken any laws or stepped on the constitution-his “crime” is smacking Hillary down in 2016-and attacking the swamp...

That's right and the 5th A says "No Person shall...be deprived of life, liberty, or property [including position IMO] without due process of law [defined at least in part in the 4th A].

I think the President falls under the category of "person".

I think to read it that way a person has to intend on reading it that way. I believe long before the so called whistle-blower brought this transcript to any official’s attention transcripts and documents were combed over to find one that could be used. Not because it was a smoking gun but because those pushing to get Trump removed from office could twist it for their story.
