Ex-Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik Says NYC Violent Crime Spike Due to Liberal Policies Hampering Police

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik has an explanation for why there has been a spike in violent crime under Mayor Bill De Blasio. Liberal policies are reversing gains made against violent crime and those who engage in anti-police rhetoric are helping to hamstring police.

Fox News:

Appearing on "Fox & Friends: Weekend" with host Ed Henry, Kerik blamed Mayor Bill DeBlasio and the City Council for a recent spike in violent crime. Murder investigations in 2019 spiked to 9.4 percent this year.

"I don't blame the NYPD. I blame the mayor. I blame the City Council. I blame the people that promote this anti-cop rhetoric," Kerik said. "They took stop-question-and-frisk away from the cops. They took enforcement out of law enforcement."

Recently, a college freshman girl was robbed and murdered on her way to class. A 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with the crime.

Kerik believes the killing is a graphic example of a decline in "the quality of life in New York City."

"We're going right back to where we were," he told Henry. "... This homicide is reminiscent of the things that went on back in the 1970s, '80s, and '90s, and people ignore it."

Not "people." The city's liberal elite, who live in well-patrolled safe neighborhoods, see criminals preying on the innocent as a small price to pay for "tolerance" and "understanding" criminals.

Kerik said he felt badly for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's police commissioner, Ray Kelly, during the stop-and-frisk era.

"You know, they continued the policies that [Rudy] Giuliani put in place. It was aggressive policing

We saw it earlier where street thugs were actually freely bullying cops with buckets of water. The only possible outcome would be escalation of violent crime on law abiding residents. The liberal clueless mayor brought this on.

Creating hellholes gins up the black democrat base... Easier to gin up hate than to keep your political promises...

With the murder of the Jews and a cop in NJ last week by a black make female duo.....has anyone asked if the Movie Queen and Slim inspired them? That movie only came out 2 weekends before the murders.

Two step process. 1) Detect criticism of Saint DeBlasio. 2) Figure out how to call critic a name instead of arguing with the criticism. In other words, basic journalism.

Kerik is a disgrace and should not be given the platform he has, IMHO. If he wants to see someone who has given the middle finger to the people of NYC, all he has to do is look in the mirror.

RE: Kerik is a disgrace and should not be given the platform he has, IMHO.

The man has already paid his debts to society. He was a good Police commissioner during his term. NYC was one of the safest big cities in the USA then.

In fact, he was the commissioner during the 9/11 attacks and stood by Giuliani keeping peace and order.

He is also a strong supporter of our troops. I am not going to let one huge mistake he made in life destroy his positive legacy for the city.

You’ll need to explain your extreme dislike of Bernard Kerik to gain ANY modicum of credibility on this forum.

Where to begin?

He received and concealed benefits of about $255,000 in renovations to his Riverdale, New York, apartment from a company seeking to do business with the city of New York. He pleaded guilty to that charge and several tax-related counts.

In 2006, he pleaded guilty to accepting tens of thousands of dollars in gifts while he working as city corrections commissioner. Under his plea agreement, he paid $221,000 in fines and avoided jail time.

Kerik was sentenced to 48 months in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of lying to Bush administration officials who vetted his unsuccessful 2004 nomination for homeland security secretary.

Kerik withdrew from consideration after allegations surfaced that he had employed a nanny with a murky immigration status.

He is the embodiment of big-city grift and corruption. Did he pay his debt to society? Sure. But that only means they let him out of prison. IMHO it does NOT mean he should have a nation-wide forum to spread his views and get paid very handsomely to do so. He is everything we say we hate about people like Biden and Pelosi. He got rich through stealing and cheating. Everyone here is entitled to their opinion, but you will never change mine about Kerik.

I know about everything you just said.

However unlike you, I read the MESSAGE to see if it is reasonable and makes sense. In this particular case, Kerik DOES make sense. He supports the cops and the difficult job they have to do in protecting America’s largest city.

Let me cite an example... we used to have a health and science teacher at junior high who continued warning us about the dangers of smoking. He made TOTAL SENSE.

That was at a time when smoking was getting to be popular among senior high school kids who wanted to look cool.

However, once, when me and my classmates were walking down the street, we happened to peer through the window of a diner. Guess who we saw? Yep, our esteemed Health teacher IN THE SMOKING SECTION OF THE DINER PUFFING LIKE A CHIMNEY! (that was when smoking in a restaurant was still allowed).

Let me ask you this... does his hypocritical act negate the truth of his teaching? Of course not.

Same principle applies with Bernard Jerik. I Read the content of his article and separate it from the man’s hypocrisy.

Thanks. I never knew the details. Got caught with hand in the cookie jar and paid the price.

We still should pay attention to what he says, though.

PS He just might be an expert in respect of preventing violent crime. Especially since he had some success in lowering the NYC violent crime rate.

I understand and totally respect both of your points about Kerik. But there are a LOT of retired NYPD police executives who could give the same perspective. Kerik has a checkered past even within the department.

He was never a boss. He was a Detective who was on Rudy's personal detail. Rudy then appointed Kerik to a number of positions that Kerik never would have gotten otherwise. Kerik is a smart guy, but he's a scheister who had no business being the PC of the NYPD, IMHO. He's a larger than life personality but we have seen what happens when he gets power. He commits multiple felonies. No thanks.

Does he know what he's talking about? Yes. But in the same way I don't want to see Michael Vick on TV talking about football, I don't want to see Kerik on TV talking about crime. Just my opinion.

Understood.

Could it be that Kerik was chosen because he is more well known than any other NYPD executive?

I’m guessing that most Americans are not aware of the “inside baseball” stuff you are talking about. And therefore equate him to the NYC crime cleanup more than they do his conviction and prison time?

Just sayin’.
