Why Workers Fear Moving 50 Criminally Insane Patients
New York Times ^ | December 13, 2019 | Annie Correal

Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center in New York City has long been a place of mystery, with little known about what goes on behind the razor-wire fences.

As a result, the state-run facility for the dangerously mentally ill — located on Wards Island in Manhattan — has gone all but unnoticed for decades, despite having held some of the city’s most notorious criminals, including serial killers and cannibals like Daniel Rakowitz, the so-called Butcher of Tompkins Square Park.

But recently, employees have been speaking up, painting a picture of what goes on in Kirby’s wards. State officials are planning to close Kirby and move its entire population — a decision that has created something close to panic among some of the staff, who say the new quarters are not safe for patients or employees.

Kirby is a maximum-security facility that holds mentally-ill patients who have been charged with a crime. Some have been granted an insanity plea by a judge; others are pretrial detainees accused of felony crimes but found unfit to proceed to trial.

The move will transfer the facility’s more than 200 prisoners, including 50 deemed criminally insane, from a fortresslike building with bars on the windows and cement walls and ceilings into a unit of Manhattan Psychiatric Center, a civilian hospital close by on Wards Island.

Officials say the move, planned for January, is necessary because Kirby’s building has grown outdated. They say patients will be placed in a refurbished section of the hospital, securely separated from civilian patients. But staff members are arguing that the hospital was never designed to handle a population with a criminal background, and say it presents all manner of risks.

“These are not normal mental patients,” said Catherine Mortiere, a forensic psychologist at Kirby.

I do not trust woke politicians talking about "mass incarceration" to protect citizens from mayhem.

“The move will transfer the facility’s more than 200 prisoners, including 50 deemed criminally insane,...”

So they’re moving the editorial staff of the NY Times?

Politicians just don’t know how to leaving working systems alone.

It seems a deliberate action so that inmates end up doing something horrible to another inmate and the politician recommends building another bureaucracy tofux the problem they created.

This would make an interesting movie script.

I was thinking that this has already made several movie scripts. At least in the movies, this sort of thing turns out as badly as real life experiments with giving democrats power.

I think the problem in NYC is that the crime rate hasn’t spiked quickly enough to please the Left. But the Left had some good news last week, with the killing of that college student near Columbia University.

“editorial staff of the NY Times”

That phrase is somewhat redundant. The only staff they have is editorial staff, including the janitor.

“happened in deadpool 2. juggernaut is gonna get loose.”

Never saw those movies, not much into action films. But I do know that in every movie I’ve seen that did have a prisoner transfer things did not turn out well.

IMDB fan list of horror movies set in mental hospitals

https://www.imdb.com/list/ls073798519/

I’ve actually seen a few of these (back in the video store days of picking a 99 cent flick for Friday night).

IIRC, in every one of them, it was - dun dun dunnnnn - the guy running the place was really the insane one.

these workers know what they talk about.

the criminally mentally ill are some of the most dangerous things on two legs.

If they are not held in specially designed units, which differ from regular mental health units, the staff will be harmed or killed, and the other patients are at risk of death.

We are talking about people who would flay a roommate to get skin to braid a rope to strangle the next person in.

Mental healthworkers have enormous constraints on what they can do to respond, or lose their jobs.

I have spoken to workers too afraid to raise a hand to a patient that they were throttled almost unto death. I have spoken to workers out for a year or more with severe injuries and these happened on regular mental health units. Mental health workers are rapidly rising in the list of being in danger, and MH work is now considered a dangerous profession, mostly because of the constraints by leftist legal and healthcare administrations dictated by government bureaucracies.

Starting from the mid 70’s and willow brook Heraldo Rivera brought to light the up hauling conditions this brought about the liberal thinking that most of these patients should be allowed be free in public, access out patient clinics for their meds and close these mental health facilities all because of the cities mismanagement and carelessness. Sweeping the bad stuff under the rug and coming up with a new and improved humanitarian solution, they applauded. Mentally ill adults do not think they are sick and either sell their meds for other drugs and alcohol or food. The citizens now have crazies pushing them off of subway platforms if front on trains, stabbings and other altercations. Most end up in the jail system which is now a mental health slash incarceration facility which they are not able to handle. Liberal a##es once again not protecting the public

It sounds like they’re totally unprepared for the move - structural changes need to be made, among other things.
