I’m surprised they’d want to live in that part of Jersey City; it is really bad. I remember when they started fleeing NYC (when Dinkins was mayor) and recall many went north to Rockland County - a very different environment.
Neighbors that I’ve heard interviewed didn’t seem to think there was tension between them, but also didn’t indicate there was much interaction either.
Bad neighborhood means low prices. The Hasedic Jews are very organized and insular. They look for a neighborhood with everything in walking distance; they have night patrols and their own ambulance service. This little community started off with a kosher market and a school already.
Thank God the killers didn’t attack the school; it was much better protected probably. Also a Catholic school very near.
