Bad neighborhood means low prices. The Hasedic Jews are very organized and insular. They look for a neighborhood with everything in walking distance; they have night patrols and their own ambulance service. This little community started off with a kosher market and a school already.
Thank God the killers didn’t attack the school; it was much better protected probably. Also a Catholic school very near.
One of my nephews teaches in a school near the situation; they were locked down for hours.
The Catholic community left there long ago; the affiliated parish has been closed a long time (probably continuing to operate the school as a mission of sorts, primarily for non-Catholics). Tough place to start off for those people moving over from Brooklyn...
