Trump's defense of Saudis grows more isolated after deadly shooting on military base

WASHINGTON - After a Saudi gunman killed three people at a naval base in Pensacola, Florida, some of President Donald Trump's Republican allies took to the airwaves to condemn the attack as an act of terrorism, call for a halt to the training program that admitted the shooter and sharply press the Saudi government to cooperate in the investigation.

Trump did none of that. Instead, he used his appearances before television cameras - and his Twitter account - to repeatedly offer cover for the Saudis, conveying Riyadh's condolences with more fervor than he used in relaying his personal feelings about the shooting.

Saudi royal family has so much wealth I think they control our lives and what we see happening a lot more than we think they do. The U.S. military now appears to be one of their "toys".

Trump’s decision to accept an entente with Saudi Arabia was his worst mistake.

You should remember that an American Army officer in Texas killed more ,13, soldiers than the Saudi Flyer.

Are you going to condemn all American army officers as well?

Hell. Saturation bomb all Saudi cities. No pinpoint bombing. Make them pay. We haven’t won a war since WW2 when we saturation bombed them into submission.

Other than the fact these murders occurred on American soil what’s different than the military personnal that have been murdered under both Bush and Obamas presidencies. What did they do or voice that’s any different than President Trump under similar circumstances?

There are two parts here, the front where he says “the Saudis are sorry” and the back where we change the process and stop letting them come here for any reason. Trump has done a great job of talking nice and doing the right thing in the background. I suspect we will not hear it, but the process will be stopped where all of these frenemies aren’t in the USA anymore for anything.

Saturation bomb all Saudi cities. No pinpoint bombing.

Not a good idea, as long as we have so many Americans living there.

I wonder if the Daily Bezos would have dealt with Obama in such lecturing tones if something like this happened during his time in office?

“The U.S. military now appears to be one of their “toys”.

In the first Gulf War US forces were used as a mercenary army. The US was reimbursed by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Japan, and Germany. From CNN, The US Department of Defense has estimated the incremental costs of the Gulf War at $61 billion, with US allies providing about $54 billion of that — Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states covered $36 billion. Germany and Japan covered $16 billion.” The US federal government, through the Veteran’s Administration, continues to pay medical and other benefits to Gulf War veterans.

Since WWII the US has taken on the role, and most of the cost, of providing defense for Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and a number of Middle Eastern Countries including Saudi Arabia. Israel is also a large beneficiary of US military aid.

Trump’s strategy seems to be shifting the US from being a direct provider of military aid to a mercenary armed force paid for by the “allies” we have agreed to defend through NATO and other alliances.

Amazon Post trying to stoke an intraparty GOP fight here. In reality this is typical beltway peanut gallery gum flapping by those who don’t have to make a decision on this. They are free to legislate such a change. That won’t be happening, of course.
