A significant event.

The US would do well to do the same.

If the Chinese do this, I fully expect Lenovo to be completely frozen out of Federal, state and local government contracts. Given that the Americas comprise 1/3 of its $50b in total revenues, I’d expect the company to scream like a little girl.

‘The US would do well to do the same.’

Buy American sounds like a good idea.

Now if wee could only source critical military parts domestically too . . .

LOL!
Presently China businesses run on pirate Windows.

Good thing to do. Pirate copies are not safe.

Does the prohibition include American smartphones, e.g. iPhone, even though they are manufactured overseas?

I have no doubt that Chinese government already is nearly 100% domestic PCs. I can’t imagine when they ever would have bought foreign PCs, except many years ago

China’s administration has ordered all government offices and public institutions to remove foreign computer equipment and software within three years.

Seems they've stepped up the view we're a threat to them..

Maybe it is now clear to them that there will be no big trade deal, in time to stop next Sunday’s (15 Dec) huge new package of tariffs on their computer/consumer electronics exports.

1. This could be their attempt at retaliation in kind for that next round of tariffs.

2. This could be an attempt to prop up their industries that will be hit by those tariffs, by protecting the Chinese domestic market for them.

I suspect China is outlawing all computers and software that doesn't contain its backdoor government access capability.
