I just knew he’d have an Amish last name.

We continue to offer young male dysfunctionals from foreign lands or from migrant families the immediate opportunity to trade military service for automatic U.S. citizenship. We are probably the only country on the planet doing this. People understand intuitively you don’t open your country’s military to foreign nationals and then expect any other result than what happened here. They can make all the excuses they want. This has happened before and it will continue so long as the policy is in force.

We had a rowdy crew on my ship, occasionally they would bring someone up for Captain’s Mast for fighting and general mayhem, but we didn’t get too upset and want to hurt anyone. The Captain was the best, we did our extra duty like good scouts, not go crazy fool on everybody. Most of us somehow received our Good Conduct Medals and became very very old model citizens.

Rome built an empire on the practice of military service resultingin citizenship. It wasn’t until 225 a.d. the the emperor Caracalla screwed things up by granting universal citizenship to everyone living within the borders of the Roman empire. Thus ended the incentive for military service. The Western empire was finished.

Point being that with all it’s warts citizenship in exchange for military service is a foundational to the western heritage.
