Nowhere in the article did they mention that this “Byrd” person was Robert Byrd, who just happened to have been a democrat senator and a former member of the Ku Klux Klan

It looks like a Hail Caesar salute. Who know there were nazis 2,000 years before there were nazis?
The ROMAN SALUTE isn’t new or unique. I would suppose that soldiers saluted their generals much like that throughout all of the history of wars.
