A lot of movie stars are on the short side Robert Redford, Sylvester Stallone, Richard Dreyfuss. Despite being only about 5-8;, Paul Newman always managed to get himself described as lanky. Al Pacino is one of the few who always seemed shorter than they were. (About 5-7;, I think.) Maybe that was because Pacino always seemed to be fighting uphill, having to try harder than anyone else. Even in the Godfather pictures, he was the little squirt of the family. Until he wasnt. He wouldnt have been Michael Corleone if he had been tall and imposing.
Being compact has proved critical to Pacinos success. His combustibility, his pugnaciousness, his scorching sarcasm, his intelligence, and his toughness all played off against his tortured hangdog eyes, his mild speech impediment in the early films, his vincibility. Along with Jack Nicholson, Pacino is the most essential American actor of his generation, endlessly watchable even in shameless-hambone mode, pumping electrifying craziness into his lines. Al Pacino has not always been blessed with great scripts but he always shows up for work. He pursues new variations on a theme. If nothing else, he makes you smile.
By contrast, consider a randomly chosen example such as, say . . . Robert De Niro. The two are frequently compared, but there is no comparison. De Niro ran out of acting ideas 30 years ago and has been coasting ever since.

Amazing. I watched it today and it was very boring. I can’t imagine paying money to go see it. It seemed like some low budget Goodfellas, Hoffa, Godfather ripoff.
#34 “Everybody Loves Ray the Mob Lawyer”
Well, it was just moving too slow.
That said, while my wife was taking a bath last night I watched another hour. It’s actually pretty good if you just accept that it’s longer than it needs to be. It would be a good Rainy Saturday afternoon time killer.
One thing, though: The Hoffa character seems to be portrayed in such a way as to cause the viewer to say, “that seems a lot like Trump. I don’t know if, considering where we are right now, that is intentional or not. Based on who is behind that thing, I think it’s intentional.
So there’s that. :)
I agree to a point. I like long movies, usually.
However, I REALLY hate being strung along in TV shows. I don’t mind if the information is important, I care about the characters, etc. But otherwise, I just stop.
The first show that ever happened with was Battlestar Galactica. I really liked the original series, but when my daughter loaned me the DVD of the remake, I got through one season and it hit me hard that it was like they were just phoning it in, trying to keep viewers watching between commercials. I never finished it.
I also did that with Outlander. Great concept, but three episodes in, I was done. Too slow.
I watched “The 100” with my grandson. The plot moved so slow that it was excruciating. Then, in one episode, stuff actually started happening. I looked over to him and said, “Ah, this must be the season finale. Things we’ve been waiting for for episode after boring episode are actually happening. This episode is actually interesting.”
It was...
I just watched. Totally enjoyed it. The length and pace, were perfect for watching at home with too many snacks.
