LONDONThe British government will review its sentencing policies after a convicted terrorist on early release from prison carried out a stabbing attack in the heart of London that left two people dead.
Police identified the attacker, who they shot dead on London Bridge on Friday, as 28-year-old Usman Khan. He had been convicted in 2012 for terrorism offenses and served time in prison for the part he played in a plot to bomb the London Stock Exchange in 2010. Three people were also injured in the attack, one seriously.
Authorities said that Mr. Khan appeared to have acted alone.
He was released from prison in December 2018 under a set of conditions that included an internet ban, a curfew and limitations on his movements and meetings. He carried a GPS tag allowing the authorities to track his whereabouts.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the scene of the attack Saturday, and criticized the early release of terrorists. The practice of automatic early release, where you cut a sentence in half, simply isnt working and youve got some very good evidence of how that isnt working with this case, he said. When people are sentenced to a certain number of years in prison, they should serve every year of that sentence, Mr. Johnson added.
Security officials said the attack reflected the difficulties of stopping less sophisticated attacks carried out by lone actors, even by people who are being monitored.
Mr. Khan was one of nine people who were imprisoned after pleading guilty to being part of a group that was plotting in 2010 to plant a pipe bomb in a toilet in the London Stock Exchange.
The group, which had been tracked by Britains internal security service MI5 in an operation code-named Guava, had also discussed sending letter bombs to other addresses

Oh a review, this is comforting. Not for the victims though. The government is killing you
Actually, it seems to me it’s the 2nd generation time again and again doing these acts.
They might as well review the length of his beard or the color of his socks.
“Mr. Khan was one of nine people who were imprisoned”
What is the status of the other eight?
The Brits invited this coven of monsters in.
Now, they enjoy the results.
Death penalty, just sayn
Just double sentences.
Certain crimes should ALWAYS be 1 strike you’re out.
The rest should be hung, drawn, and quartered.
London Mayor wants to ban Narwal horns.
Its an evil totalitarian political ideology.
Anyone know which UK Prison he had been in?
“Actually, it seems to me its the 2nd generation time again and again doing these acts.”
Yes, and it is a HUGE DEAL. The initial immigrants were generally really good people. They kept to themselves, worked hard, and simply wanted a better life for their kids, just like in the US (and that’s where the similarity ends).
But the next generation, the ones born there, often with citizenship (depending on country) and speaking the language perfectly, get RADICALIZED and are the worst. There are even cases where immigrant fathers turn in their own sons, as they see their sons talking seriously about ‘jihad’ and killing a bunch of Europeans. I’m simply unable to imagine what it would take for me to turn in one of my own kids to authorities, knowing that they’ll likely see 20 years in jail (at least in the US, for now)...but immigrants in Europe have done just that, and in doing so, saved countless European lives.
It sucks. The European governments know exactly what’s going on, but are scared to death to confront it...and so we see the results.
Agreed.
Getting more radical not less.
Rebellious muslim kids don’t speed and drink beers.
They stab and shoot and run over.
“Review Sentencing”
How about review immigration policies? No reason to wait until they kill (or attempt it) first.
Please don't say this comes as a surprise:
As to Johnson's statement that the terrorist should have served the full sentence: It just shows Johnson to be another talking head with not much content. All that would've achieved is to have postponed this attack by a few years. Johnson would be OK with that?
What Johnson fails to see or is too pussy to state clearly is that these types are beyond rehabilitation: Life imprisonment or immediate execution are the only viable options. Deportation is much too risky, as the UK also has no control over its borders and these types would just slip back into the country to continue their jihad.
He was let out early because he’s the mayor’s brother.
Meanwhile, many states in the U.S. are passing more lenient guidelines, and releasing felons, before their sentence is over. Think about that for a minute.
First responders got it right.
One bullet is cheaper and more effective than a progressive court
