An Illinois town has approved a measure to fund a local reparations program with proceeds from the purchase of recreational marijuana.
On Monday, Evanston aldermen voted 8-1 in favor of the proposal aimed at what officials believe will improve help the citys black community. Local leaders eye marijuana dispensaries as an attractive source of revenue to reverse what they call the ongoing impact of institutional racist and persisting effects of slavery, according to the Chicago Tribune. The fund will be capped at $10 million, according to city of Evanston staff reports. City estimates project the marijuana tax could generate $500,000 to $750,000 per year, the newspaper noted.
However, Evanston officials face roadblocks in collecting adequate revenue from the plan as various suburbs have yet to approve the establishment of recreational marijuana dispensaries, despite them being scheduled to become legal in Illinois next year.
We can implement funding to directly invest in black Evanston, 5th Ward Alderman Robin Rue Simmons said of the measure.
The marijuana tax will be invested in the community it unfairly policed and damaged, Simmons added.
This is a really special moment in the city of Evanston and also in the country, stated Second Ward Alderman Peter Braithwaite.
The development comes as Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced resolutions to approve studies to examine reparations proposals for African Americans over slavery.

You are quite right, in fact a good number of young men from Illinois fought and died in the civil war.
Oh no!!!! I lived in a lovely apartment near the lake in Evanston when my kids were very young. Kindergarten to about third grade. Bullding went condo, apartment sold for $600k. You get the picture.
At that time, Evanston schools were ranked 5th in the nation. Just before “bussing” began. There was a very nice section of town occupied by very nice “colored people.” My wonderful black cleaning woman lived on the South Side of Chicago and commuted. I asked her to move to Evanston, send her child to better school, I’d make sure she had plenty of clients to keep her busy full-time. She could not have been sweeter to my children—I still thank her in my heart.
But she wouldn’t come, even though stuff was stolen from her apartment down there all the time, and her kid was alone far too much. Apparently she had some rotten BF who scammed her out of everything and kept her under threat. So sad.
But now, so very sadly,, lovely Evanston has lost its mind. WT@ is wrong with these people?
How much money will the descendants of Blacks who were owners of slaves get? There were more Black owners than Whites.
to post #81:
Thanks! That works great.
Actually, there was a Civil War unit that fought for the NORTH in Southern Illinois. Black people.
Sometimes, an 80+ year old guy can help a younger freeper.:)
I have been posting pics/toons since I joined FR a long time ago.
This trick is a rather new one I learned this past year.
This changing graph year/wise drives home what states allowed slaves or didn’t.
Please use it.

Thank you. And I will certainly use it. It is very educational.
Since Sherman burned most of the courthouses including property records in the counties between Atlanta to Savannah and most between Savannah and NC It will be tough to show ownership.
....at ALL!!
Stories like this lead me to understand why young people don’t bother working (if they can help it) - or breeding; the permanent underclass will need another source of funding.
The debt has already paid by the 34,834 Illinois soldiers who died in the Civil War.
Evanston. Northwestern University.. That says it all.
Interesting fact, but a black unit that fought for the north wouldn’t be eligible for reparations, would they?
Now if they could just find a slave to pay it to...
Oh good lord...I grew up in EvanStoned. And trust me, I was NOT a popular kid!
When the Heller decision came down from the USSC, Evanston at least had the sense to say “we can’t fight this” and repealed their disgusting ban on pistols within a few days. Oak Park (of “broad lawns and narrow minds” fame per Ernest Hemingway) vowed to fight it...no clue what became of their headstrong tilting at windmills.
Rats destroying anything & everything good they touch....
“Government involvement in cannabis guarantees a robust black market.”
Indeed. That has proven true since FDR began its federal prohibition. I believe the black market was almost non-existent prior to that.
