The United States is only calling on China to honor a treaty that it signed when Britain gave up Hong Kong several years ago. If we sign a trade deal we must be able to ensure China honoring the treaty.

Not sure where you’re getting this from. The British handover to China received major coverage in 1997. Hong Kong is a major center of finance, and #3 in the Far East behind Tokyo and Shanghai in terms of market cap. Its $4.4T market cap is just behind the London Stock Exchange’s $4.5T. Serious unrest there was always going to be on the front page.
