Secretary Pompeo is in possession of forensic analysis that was done on the “hacked” DNC emails that appeared on Wikileaks and that was published by the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) organization. He has yet to respond to the VIPS findings publicly.

This Russian hacking of DNC emails and delivery to Wikileaks is at the core of the “intelligence community assessment” consensus that Russian state actors broke into the DNC servers from Russian traced sites and transferred the files over the internet WAN to their foreign disks.

The analysis of the DNC server digital image files (information extracted from the server hardware was done by Crowdstrike who was a paid contractor for the DNC. Their report was accepted without independent corroboration by any other federal or commercial agency. Their conclusion was that Russians transferred the emails to Russia via the internet.

The VIPS group analyzed the actual email files possessed by Wikileaks and determined that the encoding of the FAT blocks on the files was inconsistent with their being created as part of a WAN transfer. Instead, it showed conclusively that they were first transferred to local storage, probably a thumb drive. This strongly suggests that the files were taken by an insider with access to the DNC servers and physically delivered to Wikileaks. This scenario would call into question the Crowstrike finding of Russian internet hacking as the method of transfer. Julian Assage of Wikileaks has publicly denied that he received any of the emails from Russian sources and in at least one published report told reporters it was from a source inside the DNC. He gains nothing by trying to cover for the Russians at this point.

Until this contradiction to the “official” Crowdstrike finding is resolved any open minded person should not conclude that Russia was the sole actor behind the hacking or that the VIPS forensic analysis has been “debunked”.

As a matter of tradecraft it makes no sense for a state intelligence agency to go to the trouble and take the risk of hacking a target and then pass the information to a public site like Wikileaks. They don’t care who is elected only what they can use to influence or control them once they are elected.
