ALBANY, N.Y. For years, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and some Democratic leaders have had an antagonistic relationship with the left-leaning Working Families Party, a labor-backed group whose increasing influence and independence have only widened the divide.
So when Mr. Cuomo and state leaders decided this year to expand a public campaign financing commissions authority giving it a mandate to rewrite election laws affecting smaller political parties the independent partys leaders feared the worst.
On Monday, their concerns were realized: The commission approved a slew of changes that will make it harder for political third parties to survive in New York.
By a 6-3 vote, the commission voted that in order for political parties to maintain a guaranteed line on the state ballot, they must draw either 2 percent or 130,000 votes of the general election vote for governor or president every two years.
In 2018, the Conservative Party was the only third party to receive more than 130,000 votes in the New York governors race; the Working Families Party, with Mr. Cuomo at the top of their ticket, received some 114,000.

Actually the Conservative Party serves as a check on RINOs.
Ok. So the set the threshold low enough to allow the conservative third party but high enough to eliminate the liberal third party. Absolutely devious.
They should emulate California. Go with a jungle primary and rid of those pesky Republicans in the general election.
The Conservative Party has been a major contributing factor in Democratic dominance of the state legislature for decades.
Where I live, most Republicans (almost all) appear on both the Conservative and Republican line on the ballot.
I check each one, and vote “Conservative” if the candidate appears on both lines, and “Republican” if the candidate appears only on the Republican line.
It works a little different in NY.
Rather than nominating its own candidates, the Conservative Party usually endorses the same candidates as the Republican Party and campaigns against the Democratic candidates. However, the party has withheld support from Republican candidates if they are too liberal.
If the Conservative party gives the GOP candidate its line the votes from that line are added to the candidates total.
Is this a form of voter suppression?
We keep hearing Democrats are enraged about voter suppression. Isn’t this a type of suppression, if voters are denied choices of who to vote for?
Pretty sad when the Democrats silence their fellow left-leaning parties. Democrats are so inclusive aren’t they? What are they afraid of?
I’m not sure how it works but many time the Conservative Party has the same candidate as the Republicans.
Figure out about how many votes they expect to get and then manufacture enough fraudulent ballots to make it over the line each time. Cuomo's New York!
In California the open primary actually improves the political power of Republicans in majority Democrat districts.
Because if two Democrats face each other in November (which is common) then the Republican voters come into play and they can elect the more conservative Democrat.
In the customary system the Republicans would vote for the GOP candidate who would then lose the election in a majority Democrat district and that allows the seat to swing further to the left.
Seems thoroughly unconstitutional to me. Though personally I think they should not even list political party affiliation on the ballot. Makes about as much sense as listing their religious congregation, country club membership, Kiwanis club etc.
Political party is a private organization. It has no place being listed on the ballot but if it does, then all parties should be allowed regardless of how many votes the party got last time.
IMO, they should list candidates names only. No other affiliations.
Theyre trying to shut down the DSA
There is actually a very deep divide within the Democratic Party, even though the mass media tries to hide it as best they can.
The old FDR Democrats are socialists. They want the borders closed so the welfare state can work. They want to expand the government to include nationalized health care.
The new Democrats are the woke folks. They want open borders, want to ram sexual perversion down the throats of children, want censorship of opposing views, etc. (in addition to the usual socialist stuff).
What we don’t know (because pollsters do not ask the correct questions) is what percentage of the Democrats fall into which category.
Imho we need to divide the party by pounding that wedge and making sure every Democrat hears every crazy woke folk position loud and clear—and knows it is being pushed by their party.
Then we can make sure the Democratic Party becomes the Donner Party.
I have never understood why we have ‘parties’ in the first place?
Why not vote for the person who tells the best lies and promises the most ‘free stuff’?
You see it a lot: Republicans and democrats switching party affiliation like changing socks ... depending on who they are running against!
Just look at Bloomberg!
