Sydney (AFP) - A Chinese spy has defected to Australia with a trove of intelligence on China's political interference operations in Hong Kong, Taiwan and elsewhere, according to a media report Saturday.

The Nine network newspapers said the defector, named as Wang "William" Liqiang, had given Australia's counter-espionage agency the identities of China’s senior military intelligence officers in Hong Kong and provided details of how they funded and conducted operations in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia.

Wang said he was personally involved in infiltration and disruption operations in all three territories, according to the report, published in Nine's The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.

Wang "revealed in granular detail" how Beijing covertly controls listed companies to fund intelligence operations, including the surveillance and profiling of dissidents and the co-opting of media organisations, the report stated.

Wang is currently living in Sydney with his wife and infant son on a tourist visa and has requested political asylum, it said.

- China fears -

Wang said in an interview to be aired Sunday night on Nine's TV news program 60 Minutes that he would be executed if he returned to China.

"Once I go back, I will be dead," a youthful and bespectacled Wang said through a translator in a clip from 60 Minutes shown on Nine's websites Saturday.

Wang was also shown holding his son and walking with his wife along Sydney harbour beside the popular Luna Park amusement centre.

According to the news organisation, Wang gave a sworn statement to the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) in October saying: "I have personally been involved and participated in a series of espionage activities".

This allegedly included infiltrating Taiwan under an assumed identity and with a South Korean passport to run local operatives in efforts to meddle in 2018 municipal elections

This allegedly included infiltrating Taiwan under an assumed identity and with a South Korean passport to run local operatives in efforts to meddle in 2018 municipal elections and presidential polls due next year.

He said the operation used local media executives to influence the election campaigns and defeat candidates seen as hostile to Beijing.

The question is this -- How do we know that the riots in HK are not being instigated by Beijing's spies who have infiltrated the protest movement? This will give them propaganda material to tell the world that the protest movements are the work of foreign agents like the hated interfering superpower -- AMERICA !

Hong Kong was mentioned in this article.

I don’t think it’s so much a question anymore but of how much they are involved in the violence.

It NEVER made sense that Hong Kong protesters would get so violent and destructive to the point of setting a man on fire.

great article.

Thanks for posting.

My fears of standing up to bullies on the left and deep state and whoever doesn’t lie with my personal safety.

Though I’d RATHER not get injured :) It would not deter me.

It is fear of reprisal against family that keeps good men at bay.

Until the day comes when their safety and well being are directly threatened by the left regardless of whether you went hard against them.

I wouldn’t say Millions, but yes, they are there, stealing American technology ( many are in fact US Citizens ).

AS for Collusion, we should be worried more about Chinese collusion over Russian or Ukrainian collusion.

[That’s a good way to get your family back in China killed]

They haven’t gotten to that point yet. The unspoken understanding is that only the principal actors get the chop. Because if they get to the point of collective punishment, any kind of upheaval that turfs the party will involve the extermination of its membership. That’s 1 out of 10 Chinese. Lest you think that’s a big number, the process of toppling the last Chinese dynasty took over a century and large scale revolts that killed perhaps 100m people, fully 1/4 of China’s population in the 19th century. When the Last Emperor was finally overthrown, tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of the imperial clan’s family and supporters were massacred. It was payback for the large scale mass killings that had preceded the dynasty’s downfall.

RE: I don’t think it’s so much a question anymore but of how much they are involved in the violence.

The protests in HK were relatively peaceful with Protesters even giving way to Ambulances when needed.
The trash was being picked up by protesters the day after the protests.

That all changed a few weeks later when hundreds of white clad masked thugs went to the HK Yuan Long MTR station and started to attack bystanders and passengers and trashed and vandalized the station.

The police were called when this was going on but did not respond immediately. It took them over an hour to arrive.

Many heard these thugs speaking in Mandarin ( not the Cantonese dialect used in HK). Some of them were later found to be high fiving police men and a pro-Beijing Politician named, Junius Ho was later seen complimenting a few of the thugs.

This was simply a repeat of the protests of 2014 when the triads trashed parliament by infiltrating the protest movement then.

Wow.

I should have seen the reason behind the violence much earlier.

I’m getting old.

"The Gangster Empire"

The impeachment hearings provide a distraction from Hong Kong that seems very convenient for the ChiComs.

Why are they revealing this Chinese spy’s name. Why are photos being shown of him and his wife and infant son? Isn’t that a little stupid?

Do the Australian “powers that be” think that somehow his life or his family’s life won’t be in danger just because he is seeking asylum in Australia?

Sigh!!!

I think trying to hide his identity is fruitless anyway.

The Chicoms will quickly discover a missing asset and
they will know who he is.

Better to identify him in the open. If he gets killed or
kidnapped, we will know which entity did it, and there
Should be no more attempt at propaganda or pretending.
