Chick-fil-A reverses course, says it might donate to anti-LGBTQ organizations in future
MetroWeekly ^ | November 20, 2019 | Rhuaridh Marr

Earlier this week, Chick-fil-A announced that it would cease donations to anti-LGBTQ organizations. And, just days later, the company has backpedaled.

LGBTQ groups were rightly skeptical after the fast-food chain announced it would no longer give millions of dollars to organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian athletes, instead saying it would focus its donations on “education, homelessness and hunger.”

But, after widespread outrage from conservatives who called the end of the donations “tragic” and a betrayal of loyal (presumably anti-LGBTQ) customers, Chick-fil-A has clarified that it still might donate to anti-LGBTQ groups in future.

“Our goal is to donate to the most effective organizations in the areas of education, homelessness and hunger,” Chick-fil-A President and COO Tim Tassopoulos said in a statement. “No organization will be excluded from future consideration – faith based or non-faith based.”

Chick-fil-A has been locked in a struggle with LGBTQ activists and allies over its LGBTQ issues and CEO Dan Cathy’s previous statements opposing gay marriage.

Protests from LGBTQ activists forced the first Chick-fil-A in the United Kingdom to close, while a number of places in the United States have either rejected new Chick-fil-As from being built, or refused offers of free food from the restaurant due to its perceived anti-LGBTQ animus.

The company had earlier this year refused to stop donating money to anti-LGBTQ groups, arguing that funding them is part of a “higher calling.”

Sorry Chick-a-Fill, vague promises won’t get this conservative back. Let’s see some funding start moving, and then I’ll reconsider.

This game of chicken is tiring. I’m just going to stop eating there. Hope they close. Had enough. If you don’t stand for something then you don’t stand for anything at all. Cathy n-company has made a mockery of everyone trying to skate on a razor’s edge.

I work for them. What does that make me?

What is it that people here want? Do they want a business to flat-out say, “we don’t want them (homos) in our restaurants”?

CFA is a multibillion dollar company and they are bowing to gay lobby over a few small shops in airports and a pop up in England. Thats greed. The same God that created natural marriage is the same one of the Sabbath. I worked for CFA and saw this coming. As soon as the next generation of Cathys dies they will be open on Sundays. Mark my words. Truett is rolling over in his grave. Our family stopped eating at CFA and are encouraging others to have their kids quit working there. Its one thing to be a secular restaurant but its not good to be a secular restaurant and use Christianity to further your profits. You’re either Christian or you’re not, you can’t straddle the fence and expect us to support you.

It’s kind of funny you be talkin about him that way. According to a story within the company, several years ago when Tassopoulis was just a lower-level person working behind the counter at a Chick-fil-A, Truett Cathy himself was watching him work and told someone nearby him, “that young man is going to run my company someday”.
Guess what? He does. Truett must have seen something in him that other people don’t.
That being said, people make mistakes. Yes, they made a doozy this time, but I can’t name one business or one person thats never, ever made a mistake.

No, we want CFA to behave like a Christian company if they are going to claim that in order to get an outlandish amount of business from Christians. They should have stuck with the here is what we believe as founders but that believe doesn’t effect who or how we serve customers or employees. Thats all they have to say and then donate money to Christian groups or whoever they choose. I’m sure there are good operators but I know there are others that are not good and most of them good and bad are trapped bc of the amount they make and they dare NOT rock the boat with corporate or business consultants.

We don’t want CFA agreeing with hysterical marxist homos that mainline Christian organizations like SA and FCA are some kind of radical organizations. That should not be a big ask. That is it is quite an indictment of the current CFA “leadership.”

Truett Cathy could find literally a thousand men like Tassopoulis in CFA.

Tassopoulis didn't make a 'mistake', he made an unforced error and kicked the legs out from underneath his brand, and from every detail I've read so far, he knows it, he thinks it will blow over, and that is tantamount to daring Cathy to remove him.

It certainly amounts to biting the hand that feeds you, just so Tassopoulis can fly to National Restaurant Week and have the f@gs from the other chains talk to you instead of flipping you off. Boo hoo.

Meanwhile the entire brand is off-message and offering more conflicting signals.

"Do they want a business to flat-out say, “we don’t want them (homos) in our restaurants”?"

You want the writer above defiling the nun's costume to be a regular? Or do you want The Salvation Army adjourning to CFA after Sunday service.

This isn't a difficult choice to make. My family enjoyed a local chicken franchise known for holding CFA's (former) values on Tuesday, precisely because of CFA's capitulation.

Your company is pi$$ing in the wind, when there are no less than a dozen franchises solely dedicated to the bird, and yeah some of them are owned and run by deeply committed Christian conservatives.

I think CFA is trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Which will FAIL. Christian supporters will no longer trust them, and the LGBTQ activists will react even more viciously to this apparent flip-flop.

They’re SCROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!

“...the Salvation Army ... focus its donations on “education, homelessness and hunger.”

Well, that’s at least the latter two of the three, with areas of expertise in the first.

I’m going to try Popeye’s. If people are beating, knifing and shooting each other over a chicken sandwich it must be good.
