Black butterfly wings inspire solar cell design
11-20-2019
by Jonathan Sarfati
The common rose butterfly of India (Pachliopta aristolochiae) has big wings with large black patches. The black absorbs the suns rays that help warm the butterfly in cool weather.
Researchers analyzed the wings under an electron microscope, and discovered that the scales which cover them have their surface cratered by a disordered array of tiny holes.2

And solar power is still a pipe dream. Will never work as a substitute for fossil fuels. Just not dependable
California should use wind and solar to power things like desalinization, that can happen anytime.

Kinda like flattening a concave reflector by slicing it horozontally.

no .... increased surface .... brilliant I read over a dozen years ago about research into making vertical rods in the surface of solar panels to increase the absorption of solar rays from any angle. This isn't new, except for the idea of holes rather than vertical rods slightly spaced apart to capture more solar radiation.

Right you are.
I studied Entymology, and specialized in the Order, Lepidoptera, while majoring in Horticulture. There are 180,000 species of the Lepidoptera, in 126 families and 46 superfamilies; the Swallowtail numbers in the several hundreds of colors and forms.
