A coalition of civil rights groups are demanding that Facebook overhaul its political speech policy, according to a letter obtained by The Hill Thursday.
The letter, dated Friday, followed up on a meeting between Mark Zuckerberg and the leaders of the groups including the NAACP, Color of Change and National Action Network at the Facebook CEOs home earlier this month.
The organizations, which also include Muslim Advocates, UnidosUS and the National Urban League, are asking for a response from Facebook by Nov. 25.
Among the requests made in the letter is putting guardrails on the newsworthiness exemption, referring to Facebooks community guideline allowing content from political figures to stay up even if it breaks some of the social media platforms policies.
As we made clear in our discussion, politicians are, and historically have been, key perpetrators of rhetoric that incites racial, religious, and anti-immigrant violence and voter suppression in our nation, the groups wrote.
The politician exemption and newsworthiness exemption are deeply connected to issues of voter and census suppression and should be reformed accordingly.
The civil rights groups also called on Facebook to subject political ads to third-party fact-checking.
Facebook has come under intense scrutiny for its policy, launched in October, not to fact-check or block advertisements from politicians over false or misleading claims. The social media giant has defended the policy, saying it is not the place of private companies to police political speech.
The groups asked that posts found to contain such claims be demoted to reduce the virality of misinformation.

All constituents have a right to know their representatives views, they wrote. Politicians and candidates should not be allowed to send different messages to different populations within their constituency without any transparency that such messaging is occurring.
This is a direct attack on Brad Parscale, Trumps' director of digital media.
That don't like that Parscale has found a way to direct-target individual voters.
“...the groups including the NAACP, Color of Change and National Action Network...”
These groups have no standing to tell a private company like Facebook how to conduct their business.
All politicians do that. That’s where you find Hilary saying things like “I ain’t no-where’s tired!” or “ Where’s the Fried Chicken? I’m ready with a tiny bottle of Hot Sauce right here in my purse!”
"We cannot censor people expressing their beliefs/We are a private company who can pick and chose what is/isn't said on our platform."
If they are the former than EVERYONE needs to be able to us twitter and facebook without fear of banning.
If they are the latter (which is what they and everyone has been leaning towards) than Twitter/Facebook must be in approval of what is being said by say ISIS, Pedophiles, Child Grooming Gangs etc. while they work to outright ban President Trump and all his supporters.
They cannot have it both ways
Democrat Fascist party in action. These are not “Civil Rights” groups. Their Democrat party activists groups
bttt
Those arent rights groups.
Theyre hate groups.
Pot calling the kettle black.
When Her Heinous ran for US Senate from NY, while speaking at an Orthodox Synagogue in Monsey she condescendingly pulled the old “you know, I recently found out I have Jewish ancestry in my family” routine. Fauxcahontas, meet FauxcaYENTA. She’s trans ethnic.
we demand that you block and ban white privilege.
In other words, suppress anything that Republicans say.
I recall Biden addressing a black audience, and saying something ridiculous, like “The republicans want to put you in chains!”. What??
And some black democrats were dumb enough (zombie enough) to applaud that line.
ballot harvesting by the ‘civil rights’ mob - good
ballot harvesting by Orange Man - bad
