What On Earth Happened to California Republicans?
PJ Media ^ | 11/14/2019 | Victor Davis Hanson

From 1967 to 2019, Republicans controlled the California governorship for 31 of 52 years. So why is there currently not a single statewide Republican officeholder? California also has a Democratic governor and Democratic supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature. Only seven of California's 53 congressional seats are held by Republicans.

In 1994, then-Gov. Pete Wilson backed Proposition 187, which denied state social services to undocumented immigrants. The spin goes that it backfired, alienated the Hispanic community and thus marked the road to Republican perdition.

Not quite.

Prop 187 passed with 59 percent support. Wilson's endorsement of the bill helped its passage, and his support of it aided his landslide 1994 re-election. Among minority voters, 52 percent of Asian and African American voters supported Proposition 187. Some 27 percent of Latinos voted for it.

Liberal groups immediately sued in federal court. Just three days after the measure passed, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing Proposition 187 from going into effect. A month later, U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer issued a permanent injunction. Prop 187 never became law.

In effect, two judges nullified the wishes of more than 5 million California voters.

Arnold Schwarzenegger had supported Prop 187. Yet in 2003 he was elected governor. So what caused the Republican demise?

Ironically, radical changes in California demography may have been brought about by Prop 187 -- but not in the way many people think.

The state's population has increased by nearly 10 million in the last quarter century. Yet the growth has been marked by the exodus of some and larger influxes of others.

When Prop 187 passed, there were an estimated 1.5 million undocumented immigrants statewide. In the 25 years since, millions of others have entered the state, and the current number of those still undocumented

And by the time the destruction happens, they will expect a rescue from the federal government.

Which will come. If 2008 taught me anything it was that if you go to the U.S. Congress with a sufficiently butt-puckering tale of impending doom and terror, you WILL receive a bailout. Take it to the bank.

Indeed. My wife and I moved away more than a decade ago. Left family and friends behind and set up a new life in the Tampa Bay area.

Couldn’t take the ever leftward direction of the state. It is far far worse now. We thank God Almighty for the wisdom to leave before it got this bad.

The more important question.

What would it take for California to be American again?

Do you have the stomach for that?

There are simply more Democrats in CA than Republicans. They began voting more like Democrats than Republicans in the last generation.

I can’t wait to Escape from California. Coming soon, thank God.

I wish the entire GOP base in California would move to battleground states and save them from going blue. It would really help save the nation in the short term. Your vote is just swamped here, which is why there is not a single statewide GOP official and why only 18 of 80 Assemblymen are GOP.

Epstein did not kill himself !

But California Republicans did commit suicide.

Business leaders & Chamber of Commerce are very stupid people. They benefit by their position but could not manage their way out of a paper bag.

Cheap Labor immigrates hardcore socialists from foreign lands. Later Republicans must submit to Communist power, much like choosing China as a trading partner, but instead of vast new billion more customers,

Republicans get owned.

Business elites are just not bright folks.

And that is the simple reality.
WSJ is for Dummies.

Voting by illegals is probably the most significant reason. Motor voter targets that demographic as do the vote harvesters. This was all predictable of course. I predicted it here on FR 10 years ago. You can see what predictions are worth. Demographics is destiny.

Ca schools and roads used to be among the best.
They are now near the bottom of states. Kids have been
dumbed down thanks in part to unions.

And its not as if they didn’t have an actual conservative in the race when the California so called Republicans went whole hog for the Governator.

Demographics. California was taken down by the tide of immigrants and socialism-loving post-Boomers.

I can’t wait to Escape from California. Coming soon, thank God.

My inlaws, and their families (10+ households) have all left. My inlaws are celebrating year 2 in CDA, ID area after fleeing Ventura Co (TO). They are amongst the last to leave. 20 more family members have moved to WA, ID, CO, WY, NV, and AZ. Not many left. Both FIL and MIL side have been native Californians since the gold rush and after the civil war.

It’s easy - Republicans kept losing elections in California since they always ran Romney/McCain types who weren’t conservative and always distanced themselves from unenlightened Republicans from flyover states. Since they didn’t win elections, the candidates got even worse, and now there is no one on the Republican side who even has name recognition. Plus Schwarzenegger was completely ineffective, failed at all his own initiatives, and left office with zero achievements. Thanks, CA GOP!

2 Independents ran for statewide office and 1 won and 2 lost. Both had about 50% of the vote.

The Republican brand is very damaged in CA.

Thank Arnold, Carly and Meg, vote harvesting, massive immigration, stupid voters, dishonest media.

On the ballot propositions sometimes the voters act sensibly.

So the state is not as far left as many think, but their is no opposition at all to contest the left.

Replacement Migration: Darker Replaces Lighter.

Darker cultures of the world are failures of misery & poverty.

That is your future, decades of darkness.

Plan for it.
