Washington (CNN)Dramatic new disclosures on Day 1 of the House impeachment hearings painted an incriminating picture of Donald Trump as a President instinctively willing to sacrifice America's interests for his own.
In the most critical step so far in the investigation into Trump's alleged scheme to coerce Ukraine's help for his reelection campaign, Democrats posed a question to every US citizen at the core of this dark national chapter.
"If this is not impeachable conduct, what is?" House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, asked, arguing that the republic's values and the concept of an accountable presidency were at stake for future generations.
Using as their first witnesses two conscientious, apolitical diplomats who devoted their lives to national service, Democrats built a foundation for a case that Trump abused his far greater power. It is a story certain to play out again and again in the coming weeks as lawmakers contemplate whether to deal Trump the historic stigma of being only the third president to be impeached.
In Wednesday's most striking moment, the top US diplomat in Ukraine, Bill Taylor, revealed a previously undisclosed call between Trump and the US Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland that took place a day after Trump's notorious talk with Ukraine's President in July.
He said that an aide -- who heard the call on a mobile phone while in a restaurant in a scenario that raised national security concerns -- reported that Trump asked Sondland about "the investigations" into former Vice President Joe Biden that he had requested from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump told reporters on Wednesday he had no memory of the event.

Right on all counts, but don’t forget that the democrats tried to get Ukraine to interfere in the election. A grievous sin according to them. They tried to get Ukraine to investigate (and did) allies of the President in the 2016 election.
A fact conveniently ignored by the MSM.
Honest Liberal admits: This impeachment is fundamentally a foreign policy disagreement of the Deep State on Ukrainian military aid. Choice to die on this hill colors the entire process and will only hurt Dems ultimately.

Operation Mockingbird is an alleged large-scale program of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that began in the early 1950s and attempted to manipulate news media for propaganda purposes. It funded student and cultural organizations and magazines as front organizations.[1]
According to writer Deborah Davis, Operation Mockingbird recruited leading American journalists into a propaganda network and oversaw the operations of front groups. CIA support of front groups was exposed after a 1967 Ramparts magazine article reported that the National Student Association received funding from the CIA. In the 1970s, Congressional investigations and reports also revealed Agency connections with journalists and civic groups. None of these reports, however, mentions by name an Operation Mockingbird coordinating or supporting these activities.
A Project Mockingbird is mentioned in the CIA Family Jewels report, compiled in the mid-1970s. According to the declassified version of the report released in 2007, Project Mockingbird involved the wire-tapping of two American journalists for several months in the early 1960s.
What puzzles me is that all these liberal news outlets are losing viewers and listeners, but Rush says the MSM is influencing how the public thinks. There is a disconnect there. Could it be that the liberal news presence online is what is really influencing public opinion? Who are these people that get their ideas from CNN and NBC?
CNN is the fourth most viewed website in the world, with 95 million unique monthly visitors. I will continue to “plaster” their articles as front page for discussion as I see fit.

We’d like to see it confirmed that both the hearer(s) and the receiving phone itself were in that restaurant. If either were anywhere else, it would have to have been wiretapped. It may in any event have been electronically eavesdropped.
Remember, Newt’s call was captured from a car that was not physically within hearing distance.
Do people take it as factual or understand that it’s propaganda?
From my anecdotal experience, some people are busy living their lives, take politics with a grain of salt, put on CNN to hear a bit of news, but the declining viewership shows how discerning they are. I knew the producer who was hired by Ted Turner to start CNN, a great professional. CNN earned its reputation at first. There is zero comparison between the original news producer and the unprofessionals running it now.
We have a transcript of the call. So, it doesn’t matter.
What matters is that Trump is being wiretapped !
All traditional media is "losing viewers". People are changing the way they consume news and media. Cutting the cord, viewing news on Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, news aggregators, etc. Still, those "new" sources are presenting media from CNN, NYT, WaPo, HuffPo, Vox, AP, etc. There still isn't really a legitimate competitor to "Big Media" like CNN, so they still have a huge influence on how many Americans see the world.
So Sondland is sitting at a restaurant table, calls the President, and puts his phone on speaker? Seriously?
