Longtime GOP Rep. Peter King won't seek reelection in New York

Longtime Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) announced Monday that he will not seek reelection next year.

King said in a statement on Facebook that “after 28 years of spending 4 days a week in Washington, D.C., it is time to end the weekly commute and be home in Seaford."

"This was not an easy decision. But there is a season for everything and Rosemary and I decided that, especially since we are both in good health, it is time to have the flexibility to spend more time with our children and grandchildren," King said.

"My daughter’s recent move to North Carolina certainly accelerated my thinking," he added. His daughter, former Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, resigned from office earlier this year from office and was replaced by another Republican in last week’s election.

“... it is time ... to spend more time with our children and grandchildren,”

It’s no fun to be in the “minority” in the House of Representatives.

Meaning zero POWER and no chairmanships. It’s just not “fun” anymore.

No great loss, I could never tell where this guy really stood.

the guys a RINO anyway

He's at least Bi. Bi-political leaning left at times and right at others. Probably has to in NYC but yeah; he's a RINO too much.

Other than putting a check mark in the R column for the republicans in congress which is important; I find RINO's to be worse than dems. At least with dems you know right up front where they stand even if they dance with the devil.

Because a +3 R seat is not a safe R seat. In addition, the districts will be withdrawn for the 2022 election and a strong incumbent is valuable with new and different territory.

No one is saying it is a safe seat, but it is not true that it will be a Dem seat with 100% certainty.

He’s had his moments, both good and bad. IIRC, he defended Bubba during impeachment. Generally a RINO, though; you’re right.

King most certainly did defend Clinton during impeachment and I fully expect him to do the opposite with President Trump especially now that he's retiring.

He wants to spend more time with his children and grandchildren. His daughter moved to NC, wonder if he and his wife will follow and retire in NC?

“Almost 100% that the Democrats will take the seat.”

If not next year than the year after that. The Dems will redistrict this into a heavy Dem seat.

New York is a tough election for any republican. But after 28 years, sheesh, we need term limits.

Currently, Congressional pay is $174,000 per year, which, at an 80-percent rate, equates to a lifelong pension benefit of $139,200. All benefits are taxpayer-funded. Additionally, members of Congress enjoy the same Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) as all other federal employees, which is similar to a 401(k).Sep 23, 2019

Under both CSRS and FERS, Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at the age of 62 if they have completed at least 5 years of service. Members are eligible for a pension at age 50 if they have completed 20 years of service, or at any age after completing 25 years of service

Why do you say that? King has already voted AGAINST the impeachment inquiry. The political knowledge of many here is abysmal.

See post #5. FYI: King was already redistricted before. He used to represent the 3rd District.

I fully understand that and district boundaries will be redrawn again in just 2 years. New York is projected to lose 2 congressional seats, which means the state legislature usually eliminates republican seats, which is what happened to King after the 2010 census.

So, now that you have the background, that is why my comment that it is good to have a strong and well known candidate so they can survive redrawn boundaries for the 2022 congressional elections - important since it is an off year and if Trump wins reelection, the party in the WH usually gets creamed.

Most incumbents usually lose in their first reelection campaign since they are not fully established and as you know, a long term incumbent is hard to beat.

Please there is no need to give me a list of long term incumbent who lost since I know it can happen - the most vulnerable incumbents are those in their first term.

Did you support the Iraq War?

I have years of Peter King being a RINO and Clinton supporter. Insult someone else.

Repeating insults is pretty clever. Any other tricks? You want to hitch your wagon to a jerk like Peter King, be my guest. His track record is nothing I’d want to count on.
