Ever since its citizens liked Ike in 52 (other than one brief hiccup in 1964 when Johnson trounced Goldwater almost everywhere), the Commonwealth of Virginia had voted reliably Republican, until 2008. That year, in a wave election, Democrat Barack Obama won several states Republicans typically win, like Florida, North Carolina and Arizona. One could have been forgiven, then, for thinking Virginia would come back to the fold after the hipness wore off and the cold, hard reality of quasi-socialist governance became all-too-real. After all, this is Old Dominion were talking about, the land of Monticello and Williamsburg, of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and more prominent founding Americans than anywhere else. From Nathaniel Bacon to George Mason to Patrick Henry and countless more, freedom and resistance to tyranny have been an indelible part of that great states heritage.
But sadly, the blue never wore off. It only grew deeper and more dominant, until last week, when the tiniest tint of red faded into the darkness like the last sunset of a dying man, never to return.
Thats right, folks. With a Democratic governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, both United States senators, seven of 11 representatives, and now both State houses, the Commonwealth of Virginia is now officially a blue state on par with the socialistic dystopias of California, New York, and New England. Its been a long time coming, albeit a slow, gradual march to the abyss, but the land of the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence, and sic semper tyrannis has now become the land of the snowflakes and social justice warriors.
Which leaves many wondering, how on earth did this happen? Fox News host Laura Ingrahams Wednesday night analysis may have gotten the attention of Media Matters, but that doesnt mean its any less true. To Ingraham, the road to Democratic dominance in the formerly right-of-center state was paved with demographic changes that began taking place long before Trumps 2015 trip down that New York City escalator.
Virginia's foreign-born population nearly doubled from 2000 and 2017, said Ingraham, and these immigrants are mostly concentrated in Northern Virginia. Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, outside of D.C., and they are altering the demographic makeup of the state - and, as The Washington Post and others have pointed out, the electorate.
Quoting The Washington Posts reporting, the Fox News host noted that a full third of Fairfax Countys population is now comprised of foreign-born individuals. Half of the elementary school students there speak a foreign language at home, said Ingraham. And since immigrants are more likely to vote Democrat, well, this, of course has dragged the electorate to the left. That's just a fact of life.
As much as the left wishes to curb discussion about such things, shes not lying. The Hispanic percentage of Virginias population alone went from 7.9 percent in 2010 to 9.6 percent in 2018, accounting for almost half of the states overall population growth during that time. While most are undoubtedly good people, hard workers, and solid economic contributors, the fact that they come from big government countries with little regard for personal freedom makes them more likely, sadly, to vote for such policies in their new country. And exit polling shows that 60 to 70 percent of them do, without fail, election after election. Such voting behaviors, of course, are likely over time to lend themselves to turning their new homes into the same sort of hellholes they left, but for whatever reason, most are either unable or unwilling to see the tragic irony.
Hispanics and other immigrants arent the only factors, of course. Northern Virginia has experienced an exodus of people seeking an escape from the bleak economic conditions of both Maryland and Washington D.C. for years. They too fail to see the irony as they poison their new home with the same failed policies as their old ones. Either way, demographics will always be destiny. Its a fact the left has understood for decades, but Republicans have either failed to see or feared to point out.
I live in deep-red Tennessee, almost literally a stones throw from the Virginia border. My town, Bristol, has a half in Tennessee and a half in Virginia. Already, many are wondering how a $15 minimum wage will affect small businesses already struggling to survive on the Virginia side. Others worry about new gun legislation that will automatically make criminals out of the law-abiding and take away their right to defend themselves. Several I know personally are at least talking about moving over here to Tennessee, and freedom, and state governance by people who, despite their faults, at least understand the concept of basic economics.
Obviously, elections have consequences, and Virginians will get to bear the consequences of their poor choices, and that quite soon. Look for bloated budgets, higher taxes, economic misery, and more social unrest as Virginia slowly but surely goes the way of California. Its sad, tragic even, but in another sense its also part of the beauty of federalism and why the nations founders left the states the powers not expressly given to the federal government. Virginians failed to learn the lessons of quasi-socialist California and others, so theyll just have to experience it themselves. Itll be a lesson that we Tennesseans and other red state residents can observe and hopefully learn from firsthand - never, ever, ever go full blue.
“That is merely a symptom of a decadent and sick society. The fact is that the Greatest Generation built an empire and gave it to their idiot sons who promptly squandered their inheritance. We are going to tank the USA immigrants or not. It’s in our DNA.”
Oh so true!! If you want to see exactly how true, watch the first five minutes of this video about the book Coming Apart. http://bit.ly/36TVydS

“”This is what is happening in Western Europe....the demographic change is permanent and will ensure socialism remains in ever-increasing power.”
At least one person gets it.
Virginia just went full retard.
"The gun will be taken to another room and the gun owner will be made to feel comfortable." - Governor Northam
I was really surprised at what I found on my first trip to northern Virginia more than 20 years ago. My one lasting impression was that it was a hot, crowded, sterile place ... and this was an impression that was formed in my mind while I was sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Beltway -- on a Saturday morning.
It may have been the only time in my life when I (figuratively) got out of my car and kissed the ground when I returned home -- to NEW JERSEY, of all places. LOL.
Again -- this was 20 years ago. Immigrants didn't ruin Virginia. White Americans from Maryland did.
"In any collaboration between two men (or groups) who hold different basic principles, it is the the more evil or irrational one that wins." -- Ayn Rand, Capitalism - The Unknown Ideal
When you engage in the feckless collaborations and make the lopsided deals the GOP is so fond of, ruin is the inevitable result. Collectivist ideals need to be blasted off the face of the Earth, but don't look to the Republican Party to even attempt a genuine fight for liberty. They are just the faction of Deep State-affiliated narcissistic sociopaths who couldn't win their local or state elections with a (D) after their names, so they tried it with an (R), instead.
He neglected to mention public employees.
I’d be willing to be that local, state, and federal employees living in VA vastly outnumber illegal alliens.
If so, even if you get rid of the illegals, you still have a problem. A problem that you are paying through the nose to screw you silly.
Theyll probably change the name off Leesburg now
Virginia has been in decline for many years but most just covered their eyes and refused to see it. I lived the first few years of my life in Virginia and returned for a stint in the Marine Corps in the early 90’s. It was obvious to me then that things had drastically changed, Washington D.C. was stretching far beyond what I remembered as a kid. Government became the main business of northern Virginia and as we all know most government civil service workers are leftists, native Virginians were becoming a minority to bureaucrats raised in New York and California that were moving in. I knew then that it was only a matter of time before conservative Virginia was gone, it might not have been illegal immigrants at the time but it was being overrun with coastal immigrants bringing their leftie agenda with them. That was over 25 years ago and the writing on the wall was showing then.
I noticed the author refer to Tennessee as “deep-red”. I wouldn’t be so sure of that, Tennessee is starting to show some early signs of leftism itself. It wouldn’t surprise me to see TN trend towards becoming the Colorado of the south, the trends are not all in a positive direction there.
VA had its own Redness issues - there were fault lines in the GOP there, long before it was a national issue. Senator John Warner (R), organized a third party candidate to run against Ollie North in 1994, to ensure North did not become a Senator as well. When you have that kind of a GOP in your state, its hard to stay united - John Warner is probably happy the RATs won there as well.
“Yeah, yeah, I know Im supposed to just say something about illegal aliens”
This entire mess started when we took in refugees from Russia in the early 20th. We imported hard core Marxists. They burrowed in like ticks and have been busy ‘transforming’ this country ever since.
The trend is certainly heading in that direction thanks to massive ILLEGAL ALIENS invading & voting.
Where is the TX Gov?
Not sure where youre from, but demographically, places like Falls Church and Arlington, look a lot like LA; and Vienna is a Middle East colony.
Virginians will be surprised how fast VA will change into a progressive shit hole. When maggot Malloy stole the election in 2011 to make Ct a one party state, he transformed a prosperous, business friendly state into a progressive hell hole in just 8 years. Of course the loathe some Lowell Weicker set the stage by jamming the income tax down our throats in 1991.
If you look at the facts, immigrants from Chicago, Flint, Cleveland, Pittsburgh .... Rust Belt cities to TX, GA, FL are the real threat, not immigrants from South of the border.
Jobless Rust Belt immigrants move to the jobs. No Republican, no Conservative is operating a welcom wagon to meet and greet us Yankees and ask us to consider why there are no jobs in Chicago but plenty of jobs in Rust Belt states.
Ohio is turning Red because Ohio Republicans have jobs and Ohio Democrats do not. So it is Ohio Democrats who are leaving the state and leaving a higher ratio or Republicans in Ohio.
Ohio’s good fortune is the reverse in TX, GA, FL, NC, TN.
But that could be flipped. Those voters could be flipped. Here in GA those yankee voters are ripe for flipping. But the Republicans, The state GOP, Heritage, CATO, AFP are so busy preaching to the choir they do not see what is happening.
Demography is Destiny.
If CA has 5+ million ILLEGALS, then TX has an equal number...or more.
TX needs to be more proactive in discouraging ILLEGALS - i.e. no public education, no welfare, etc.
I was born & raised in Ohio and been here all my life except for 5 years in Hollywood...and it’s good to see OH turn back to red.
