Democrats win full control of Virginia statehouse

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Democrats continued their winning streak under President Trump on Tuesday and took full control of the statehouse for the first time in more than two decades.

Democrats won majorities in both the state House and Senate in the marquee warmup for next year’s presidential election, the third election in a row in which they have made significant gains since Trump was elected.

Of the four states with legislative elections this year, Virginia is the only one where control of the statehouse was up for grabs. Republicans had slim majorities in both the state House and Senate.

National groups, particularly those aligned with Democrats, pumped huge amounts of money into the contests as a way to test-drive expensive messaging and get-out-the-vote campaigns ahead of the 2020 cycle. Gun control and clean energy groups affiliated with former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg spent several million dollars helping Democrats.

Virginia also drew several high-profile visits from 2020 presidential hopefuls, including former Vice President Joe Biden, as well as current Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump tried to rally Republicans via Twitter but stayed out of Virginia, a state he lost in 2016.

His election three years ago has been disastrous for Virginia Republicans, particularly in growing suburban areas. Democrats have won every statewide contest, picked up three additional congressional seats and now are set to control both the state house and the Executive Mansion for the first time since 1994.

Republicans were hoping an off-year election with no statewide candidates on the ballot would help defuse the anti-Trump energy that powered previous cycles. GOP lawmakers also were hopeful that the specter of a possible Trump impeachment would anger and motivate the Republican base.

The loss of Virginia, Nevada, and New Hampshire over the last 15 or so years has really made our presidential races difficult along with Colorado drifting away.

NH might come back, next year, but Virginia is gone.

Yup, although I'm not really sure NH will come back. I think Virginia is lost forever. It's now 'South Maryland'.

And what about the millions of Californians moving to Texas....?

Good for you, Virginia! You deserve it.

super depressing...but I still recall the most depressed I have ever been for an election. It was the morning after Obamas second win. I had went to bed thinking no way Obama was going to win and felt really good about Virginia. I wake up and Obama has won and Allen had lost to Tim Kaine. I was literally devastated. My husband and I went out to eat and I was ranting and everyone was looking at me like I was crazy...I was.

Trump lost NH by just several thousand votes. Demographic trends are not good for the GOP in any case, though I’m optimistic Trump will win in 2020.

I'm pretty much with you there. Too many former Massachusetts residents now vote in New Hampshire. Also college students get away with voting in their home states PLUS voting in NH.

I'm optimistic Trump will win in 2020, too, but he / we can't take anything for granted...

Seeing NH flip was tragic. Small state...just got overwhelmed by blow-ins & people who use it as a place to sleep while they drive down to work in Boston.

Yes, state after state keeps flipping Democrat and we just think all is fine.

We think Trump is in office, so all will be OK.

Meanwhile, we are sliding toward communism...Trump is just a speed bump.

How do rural areas of Virginia vote for Democrats in the Assembly and Senate?

I understand the votes around DC....but Virginia is a big, diverse state.

most districts are gerrymandered into the urban and close-in suburban areas.
The democrats didn’t run on anything. They clammed up once governor black-face and LT gov “rapist” went dark. Not one answered a question about guns, abortion, taxes..
That means, they’re going to approve infantacide, ban guns and raise taxes, starting with the gas tax.

Bye bye.....the consolidation begins like most rat strong holds. Example.............a friend of mine in NY complained that during the governors race not a mention, interview or rally of any sort for the republican candidate on any news outlet, paper or publication until THE DAY OF THE ELCTION.It saw a brief two minute spot on a network in the AM introducing the republican candidate to the public. These scams, voter fraud, redistricting, and now rank voting in NY starting in 2021 continues the grip and control of the rats for the future. We can guess with certainty that when they get the chance to regain the presidency they will be doing the same, “never again” will be their mantra

I thought I finally escaped corrupt Democratic run states. I was born and raised in NY, went to school in MA and NJ, and lived out in CA. I thought I finally hit a great place to live with decent and efficient government but alas that is now over. Next move is down I-95 to FL.

Virginia is going to experience what HL Mencken said about democracy: “Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.”

No it’s not. With the census next year Democrats get to remap the legislative and congressional districts. That should be good for an extra seat or two in the House and continued control of the legislature for some time to come.

Has nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with outside money, the ever-expanding DC swamp, immigrants and fraud. VA is gone for good.

Republicans love to virtue signal and tell us how much they LOVE legal immigration. Immigrants that actually become citizens vote Democrat over Republican 70-30. With Asian Americans it is more like 90-10.
