California DMV ‘data breach’ exposes thousands of drivers’ Social Security information

SACRAMENTO —

Already besieged by problems including long wait times, the California Department of Motor Vehicles on Tuesday said it suffered a “data breach” in which federal agencies, including immigration authorities, had improper access to the Social Security information of 3,200 people issued driver’s licenses.

Notices of the data breach went out to those whose Social Security information — including whether or not a license holder had a Social Security number — was accessed during the last four years by seven agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Internal Revenue Service, the Small Business Administration and district attorneys in San Diego and Santa Clara counties.

The issue was discovered by the DMV on Aug. 2 and access to the information was cut off, officials said. The disclosure of the information did not involve hacking or sharing information with private individuals, according to DMV spokeswoman Anita Gore.

“Protection of personal information is important to DMV, and we have taken additional steps to correct this error, protect this information and reaffirm our serious commitment to protect the privacy rights of all license holders,” Gore said. “That’s why DMV immediately began correcting the access error following a legal compliance review, ensured that no additional confidential information was disclosed to these entities, and has implemented several additional layers of review.”

I'm shocked!

The hip slick and cool generation doesn't know much about securing data.

...

‘The disclosure of the information did not involve hacking or sharing information with private individuals’

Sounds to me like they are really saying that they forgot they were allowing the INS access to the DMV database, so now the INS knows exactly who all the illegal immigrants they issued driver’s licenses to are and what their addresses are.

It's a requirement to have a SSN for a driver's license in Texas, so this shouldn't be too surprising. Then again, you could get lectured by the poll workers if you tried to show your CA driver's license as ID before voting. So, why bother with any SSN for CA?

You can go on line and make an appointment. We were at the DMV two weeks ago. There was a line but we had an appointment and went to the head of the line to a desk set up for those with appointments. We had our business taken care of within 30 minutes.

I just renewed my California license and went the real ID route. You have to show an identity document (e.g., passport or birth certificate), social security card or W-2 with your social security # on it, and two proofs of residency (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement, property deed, insurance document). Not only do they check off that you've brought in these documents, they scan them all in. When they did that, I thought I better sign up for Lifelock. I don't like the DMV having copies of my passport and social security card.

Similar to the data breach of SSN on registered voter database in GA.

But you can trust government that it will properly protect your medical information and only appropriate government bureaucrats (like me) will be able to see it. You can trust us. Your medical information will only be used for the common good.

That was pretty much the process for us in Texas, especially since we were new residents of the state. But I agree with you about trusting CA DMV at your own risk.

There is absolutely no reason for the DMV to have your Social Security information. The issue of deadbeat dads is just a ruse

We’ll, hey! The guvnah’s poolboy told him the SS Card counterfeiters need a new batch of fresh numbers to steal. So Newsom obliged, or something along those lines.
