After Years of Common Core, Betsy DeVos Announces ‘Devastating’ Results
Conservative Fighters ^

Posted on 11/03/2019 4:14:51 AM PST by DOC44

Years after Common Core made its debut in many state education systems, the disastrous long-term results of the program are finally being seen.

The students’ reading assessment paints a grim picture of educational readiness, with tested fourth and eighth graders failing to best the previous test’s results. This year’s results were only marginally better than those from 1992.

The mathematics scores show the most damning results — an upward trend until the year 2015, when the momentum seemed to grind to a halt. Although there were double-digit gains since the ’90s, fourth graders only managed to score a single point above their previous tests. Eighth graders failed to meet that low standard, sinking below their predecessors from two years before.

This failure in U.S. schools comes at a time when Chinese students appear to be blowing American children out of the water.

If we expect our future engineers, scientists, and mathematicians to compete in an increasingly globalized world, it’s clear that Common Core needs to be abandoned.

Just an observation:

Common Core, now nearly two decades on its march to ...?

Recall that event in October 1957 that shocked many, even the American educational establishment (viz., a Russian satellite in Earth orbit - beep, beep, ... )?

That spawned "The New Math" and other "educational" programs. For example, if you finished high school in the early 1960s, you likely just missed all that "set theory" fun.

Moving to the 1980s - "The Nation is at Risk" sent up numerous red flags, the real results were several Presidents became the "Education President" - well, in name only it was realized.

So, now, Vos states, clear as sunlit skies, the obvious.

The last "quality" public education system in the United States ended in the early 1960s.

Just a surmise, public education in the United States today is ineffective and can not be fixed - think of the VA as a similar dyfunctional organization.

You do not get the time back. Words are not Actions; Actions are not Results. [Or, EXPECT what you INSPECT.]

Where are the next generation(s) of teachers coming from, if any?

“Educational needs”

Different students learn in different ways and are also at different levels of cognitive development. Schools need to try to meet the needs of all students the best they can. Some students are visual learners others are process (doing) learners. Students enter school and each grade with a different set of skills and knowledge. A teacher has to take these students and teach them in ways so all achieve and obtain knowledge and skills. There is no curriculum that meets the needs of all students.

“You think schools in this country are interested in traditional education?????? Their mission is thought control...”

I understand why you think what you wrote is true, but I believe you are wrong. It may well be true that some teachers and school systems (NYC cough, cough) have those goals, but to be honest, schools aren’t that well-organized and self-discipline to achieve any of those results.

Truth is, most schools and teachers are muddling by, captive to the latest educational fad to be shoved down their throats. Math by far seems to suffer from this. Forty years ago I was teaching 4th & 5th graders “modern math” where the little tykes were expected to make their own discoveries in how math operated. God forbid you made them memorize their times tables.

Today common core math teaches techniques that to my eye makes math more confusing rather than less and results in 8th grade students who either rely on their fingers or a calculator to solve 3 digit addition problems.

Re: “captive”

No one is holding gun to head of any government teacher. They cooperate with evil for money, generous vacations, and outstanding pensions.

Government teachers hurt children for money.

Personally,....I shun government teachers. I don’t have abortion workers for friends, either.

Leftards don't care. They want the masses to be so ignorant that they can't make decisions without being told what to do by the giverment. Then they wont be able to take care of themselves and they will need the giverment to do it.

Theosophy was embraced and practiced by America’s 19th century elites. If I remember correctly, Blavatsky “channeled” ascended Tibetan mystics during her trances for gullible but rich New Yorkers. Her version of transcendental Theosophy made her a rich woman. I believe some remnants of the Theosophical Society still exist.

“... They cooperate with evil...”

I think there’s a difference between wrong-headed and evil. People have been trying to figure out the best way to impart knowledge into kids’ minds for a long time. Just because a method doesn’t work or doesn’t work as well as hoped doesn’t mean it was deliberately created to not work.

Speaking of evil and hurt, when I started teaching paddles were in every classroom. We were actively encouraged to use them. However, their use was less than when we were students, and far less than when our grandparents were students. Today corporal punishment is banned in many states and discouraged in the rest. So today’s discipline is far worse than it used to be, but teachers are no longer allowed to inflict actual pain on students. Progress or no?

To equate “government teachers” with abortion workers is a bit over the top for me, but to each his own.

Chinese students and other Asian, white, black kids are being taken out of advanced classes and put back in regular classes in the name of diversity.

Students in Milwaukee’s MPS system are vying for the lowest of the low in test scoring.

When the physical “board of education” was taken out of the classroom and schools the learning environment went from a structured, orderly one to one of disruption and violence.

“wrong head” or evil.

Does it make a difference to the child who is crippled by illiteracy? It is evil to continue with practices that has such devastating consequences for a person’s **life**!

Yet....Every day government teachers cooperate with this **evil**! They do it for money. No one is holding a gun to their heads.

This is one campaign promise that Trump made that he has done absolutely NOTHING about.

Yes, but initiatives that Big Collectivism has a major stake in are extremely difficult to combat when one has no allies in Congress and a public constituency that is divided-to-indifferent on the tactics of education reform.

Say 8 plus 9.
Round up to 10+10 = 20.
But you only had 8, so it is 20-2 = 18.
Oh - and you only had 9. So that is 19-1 = 17.

One of the things that I have noticed is that most math "reform" is merely taking topics out of their logical order. I know many math tricks like that and that's how I often do it in my head for larger numbers, but you need a solid base with lots of practice to get to that point. It's like they took the brightest kids at a higher grade, figures out their tricks and shortcuts and tried to teach them to beginners, thinking that the tricks and shortcuts were the cause of their intelligence rather than the result.

It was similar to the "new math" in the 70s. Take some college level set theory and teach it to kids plus different number bases because of computers. The funny thing is that I don't remember them teaching base 60 or base 24 which even children dealt with regularly when telling time.

China.. and the tax dodging corporations that are hiring H1bs. If they were forced to pay citizen taxes on their foreign hires, we would see changes.

Government Teachers steal money from little children.

There is no lower life form on Earth,
below lawyers and used car salesmen.

Govt Teachers form bully groups, with picket signs,
all to rip off kids.

Govt Teachers are disgusting filth.

Common core was never designed to educate. It was designed to equalize outcomes by punishing the capable students and hold them down to the level of the least capable students.

Yes, it still exists, but as more than just a remnant. Take Lucis Trust for instance. Founded by Bailey (the other founder of New Age/New Spirituality) shortly after the turn of the century, it was originally called Lucifer Publishing. Check out these links:

https://www.lucistrust.org/about_us

https://www.lucistrust.org/blog_wgun/un_manifesting

"The Lucis Trust is a nonprofit service organization incorporated in the United States in 1922 by Alice Bailey and her husband Foster Bailey, to act as a fiduciary trust for the publishing of twenty-four books of esoteric philosophy published under Alice Bailey's name, and to fund and administer activities concerned with the establishment of "right human relations". These include the Arcane School, a school for esoteric training, World Goodwill, Triangles, a lending library, The Beacon magazine, as well as the publishing company."
