US recognition so often touted when discussing Truman, who wouldn’t allow a Jew in his house, was de facto. And based on the factos on the ground, the US boycotted arms sales to Israel. Yes, like France, some Americans cheated. Russia supplied arms through the Czechs directly. Of course when during the early development of Israel it became apparent Israel wouldn’t become an anti West socialist outpost in the region, they changed and armed the Arabs.
