Days of terrifying darkness, cold and hunger amid PG&E’s sweeping power blackouts

CLEARLAKE, Calif. — For four nights, Eliana Rubin cared for her newborn son, James, by candlelight.

The baby, 11 weeks old, is her first. He’s colicky and wakes often, she said. As the latest Pacific Gas & Electric safety shut-off dragged on this week, she lit a flame by her bedside each time the child woke, but was careful to blow it out before falling asleep again. Even more than the dark, she worried about the near-freezing temperatures inside her home in this remote part of Northern California.

“The thing is the cold,” she said Tuesday. “I am, like, folding him under the blankets.”

Carter, who lives on the north end of the lake, is raising three children, including her daughter’s two toddlers. The little ones, she said, were filthy and “all I can do is wash them down with a wash rag.” The blackout made them terrified of the dark, she said, so that she now can’t even close their bedroom door at night.

Carter froze two cases of water before losing power to keep her freezer cold, but it started to melt on the fourth day, which meant lost groceries. She figures she’s already out more than $100, and can’t afford to lose more. She’s an in-home healthcare aide but hasn’t been able to work since the outage. Her husband works at a maintenance yard. It’s going to take her about three weeks to make up lost wages, which means paying rent late, she said.

“Fortunately, I have a really cool landlord and he’s understanding,” she said. “But I think if this continues to go on, he can’t be so understanding.”

I’m sorry for all these people. They didn’t expect frontier life. None of us does.

We have electricity here in North Carolina. Natural gas heat and stove, too.

The last to leave California will be all the illegal aliens the government is giving our money to.

Behold, this is what liberalism gets you. Vote for them if you want your state to wind up like a Balkan state.

It has been stated thousands of times BUT, it cannot be stated often enough, California brought the disaster that the Golden State has become upon itself. Decades of insane libs voting for insane lib policies has caught up with them.

The state that once was the envy of the nation has become the laughing stock of the nation. A mismanaged nightmare that people are fleeing where once people were attracted to like insects to a porch light.

NY, NJ, and other liberal hellholes are not far behind. Most are hemorrhaging residents fleeing insane taxation.

Bad news is, Liberalism is indeed a mental disorder and the result of this is, those people fleeing to Red States will vote Exactly as they did in the states they are fleeing.

I thought about food spoilage too during the Blackout this week. Not for me, but for the local grocery stores and restaurants. They had no choice but to toss tons of raw and cooked foods into the dumper. The walk in freezers don’t stay cold for long without constant electricity. Panda Express Chinese Food cannot keep those hot trays full of Mongolian Beef forever.

This loss of business income will hopefully be a consideration for future blackouts. Any new business venture will need to think twice before making California it’s Headquarter location. We haven’t even analyzed what happens to people who can’t go to work and earn money. That will produce more homeless and destitute people, as if we didn’t already have our fill.
What do you do when your child’s school is cancelled due to no lights, no heat first week of November? You have to stay home with them, everybody bored beyond measure or grumpy due to their routines being disrupted.

Stop with the candle. Get yourself a florescent lamp that works on batteries. They’re stupid cheap. Why aren’t you prepared for this. You knew it could happen. And tell your landlord to get a damn generator.
