Two of the world's biggest car companies Fiat Chrysler and PSA - the owner of Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall - confirmed that they have agreed a merger today.
The move would tie together Fiat Chrysler's major position in North America and PSA's status as Europe's second largest carmaker, to create the world's fourth biggest vehicle firm.
The firms say that they could save £3.2billion (3.7billion or $4.1billion) in costs with the merger, but claim they could do this without any factory closures.
However, the deal is likely to face fierce scrutiny as employees and unions fear that it would lead to jobs being lost in France, Italy and the UK, where there is particular concern for the Ellesmere Port factory.

Wow, hard to keep up with this stuff without a program. I had no idea that GM had dumped Vauxhall.
Turned around and SCROOOOOD them by making Chevy the title sponsor of Manchester United.
Although their parts have continued to be in the US market. For example, until recently all the MINI vehicles had Peugeot engines.
That’s a real assemblage of greatness. Too bad Yugo’s still not around to be part of it.
Yeah. I had a 404 inflicted one me during that time frame.
Fiat’s not doing so hot either, their cars are pure crap. Hell, the tailgates are falling off the Ram now. That’s just pure bad skills.
Fiat can screw anything up. At least they have only been targeting the French, first Renault, now this.
What could work better than having all the crappy brands under one umbrella?
Fiats have always been crap. I’ve owned a few back in the 70’s because they were fun to drive when they ran. I developed my mechanics skill on Fiats.
It appears that the crappy car manufacturers of the world are coalescing.
Ping.
If so, have they at least made that tube wide enough to accept a standard spark plug wrench???
I KNOW how it happens that so many french cars get burned in a riot!
This is pretty funny. I think this is absolutely the right move. Why not go from the reliability frying pan into the fire? :D
I wouldn’t touch a Jeep or Chrysler 200 with a ten foot pole. And the dart, haha.
A friend of mine had a Fix It Again Tony X19. It drove OK, until I got to a hill. In 1st, with my foot to the floor,I could’ve sworn I heard an engine noise that sounded something like “I think I can, I think I can...”
Peugeot
Renault
Citroen
Three reasons why the French are known for their wines.
And IRT Vauxhall - I had a British car (74 Triumph) and I will never have another.
Some Peugeot vehicles are already stateside, but with different badges.
Way back in the mid-’70s I almost bought a Peugeot 504. We had two little kids under 4 years old and our ‘73 VW Bug had become too small. The 504 was a really nice car but we ended up buying a Toyota Corona station wagon instead. That Toyota lasted for 12 years, so I never regretted not buying the Peugeot.
There hasn’t been this much clustering of crappy automakers since British Motors. They should throw in Renault-Nissan for good measure and at least the monumental slow motion train wreck would be entertaining to watch.
That's been a principle that I have lived by my whole life. I figure that life is too short to be troubled by owning a Chrysler. I used to suffer vicariously through my father-in-law but he wised up and stopped buying Chryslers.
